Viewport Texture Shaded Mode Jaggie issue with self made prop - fixable?

Hey guys and gals!

So, I'm scratching my head on this one (not that I'm that experienced with these things).

I made a 'simple' 8ft measuring stick for Daz (it's a freebie in the freebie section of this forum if you want it).

The issue I'm having is that, while it looks rather nice in Iray, the numbers are barely readable in the Daz Viewport - Texture Shaded mode.

Also note the missing lines in the Texture Shaded viewport.  Since a lot of people like to use Texture Shaded mode for the viewport (since it 'resolves' much more quickly than Iray mode does), well I'd like to fix this if I can.

Ignore the 'blurry' 3Delight render.  That's my first 3Delight render ever, and I was just doing a test render so I don't have a handle on 'focus' in 3Delight obviously.  Not important.

I've tried different texture map sizes (currently 1200x9600, but I've also tried 2048 x 8192, or 4096 x 4096), which didn't help much at all (still quite jagged looking in the texture shaded viewport).

The stick is a simple Daz cylinder primitive, 8ft, 8 sections, 4 sides, 0.5ft width.  I didn't need it to be any more complex than that.

Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions on how I might get this measuring stick to look a bit prettier/more readable in the Texture Shaded viewport mode?

  • Is there a reason you need the viewport to look good?

I am guessing you want a way around buying Measure Metrics. Don't rely on high detail in the viewport. Alternate bands of colors at whatever internal you need. Don't rely on text.

Otherwise, who cares what it looks like in viewport? Things that look awesome in viewport can be donkey butt in a render. Never trust the viewport.

    Mainly, readability is the issue.

I have Measure Metrics, and use it occasionally when I'm trying to dial in specific dimensions on characters, but that involves extra steps, plus then there's the cleanup afterwords as the MM nodes clutter up the scene tree.

This stick loads quickly (loads in about 1 second, seriously), can be manipulated easily, and doesn't require a lot of overhead.  Plus it can be used to measure things other than figures (rooms, objects, furniture, etc.).  It's great when you are working with multiple characters that haven't been together in a scene before, to double check and fine tune their heights quickly.

There's the tape measure thing that Daz and/or Measure Metrics has, but I never managed to figure that one out.

Plus, the measure stick prop can be used for other things like depth guages for streams, pools, and such.

  • If the base texture has the markings you need, use those to form color bands to give a visual cue.

Pink/green/pink... Etc, then a third color for major divisions.

So, pink and green alternating per inch, then blue/yellow at the foot markers?

Then you don't need to read the numbers exactly.

Of course, if you're measuring a stream, do you need an exact measure?

I only really measure people. I mean, if the Polykarpov Po-2 model isn't exactly the right number of meters, I sure as heck won't know the difference.
