3Dconnexion 3DX-700028 SpaceNavigator... useful for DS?

Hi Folks.

I was reading about this. Looks very impressive to a dunce like me.

Has anybody been using it and what has your experience with it been like.

Thanks.

Essential to me in Daz Studio.

I had one a long time ago and returned it because I found it much easier to just use a mouse in Studio. Some people love them for 3D projects and some find them too awkward. Try to get one from a place where you can return it just in case you're more like me than Bluejaunte.  :)

At one time there wasn't any drivers or capability for use in DAZ Studio on a Mac.  That may have changed, I haven't checked in quite some time.

Oh awesome, I need to look into that. Waaay back in the mists of time I had a controller for my PC games that had a puck like that, I absolutely loved it. I didn't realize they had come back around
  • These were pretty popular with the 3D CAD engineers where I used to work.  I picked up the $99 model at a local overstock store for half price. Personally, I like it (on a Windows system) for manipulating the view of the model.

Well I just ordered one off Amazon, we'll see how it does.  I found a review video on Youtube for it showing how it works in use, and I can see how it will make a huge difference in the right program.  I'm especially thinking it will help me finally learn Blender, since one of the main problems I've had is manipulating the view just does not click for me, I can never seem to get past that for some reason.  And on the official page listing supported software, Studio is listed as certified, so it should work fine.

    That's good news.

Let us know how it works for you. Personally, I can use all the help I can get. If this is a big help to you I will think hard about getting one.

Sure thing, I'll let you know once I get to play with it some. It's supposed to come in today, but Amazon's delivery service has a piss poor track record of actually delivering anything to this address.  I will probably have to have them redirect it to my office on monday if history holds true

Ok, they actually got it to me when they were supposed to and I've hooked it up and tried playing with it.  So far, all I can do with it in Studio is zoom.  Nothing else.  I hopped over into blender and it works beautifully.  It'll definitely take some getting used to, but in just a couple of minutes poking around I can see where it will definitely make things easier over there.  But I'm at a loss as to how to get it to work in Studio (I've already checked and it's enabled in device settings and the plugin inside Studio is loaded and working).  I'm going to keep poking around and see if I can figure out how to make it work

I own a SpaceNavigator and use it exclusively with DS, but it can be finicky out of the box.  New 3DxWare drivers were posted on  Wednesday.  Be sure to install it:

    https://www.3dconnexion.com/service/drivers.html

Select Custom Install and un-check the driver options for all the apps you don't use.  You won't find DS on the list but you can utilize every axis with just the default driver.

I tried all of your recomendations on my main computer and had no difference in performance at all.  However, when I hooked it up to my secondary machine it immediately worked exactly as it's supposed to.  I even had the hyper speed in Studio I've seen a lot of people complaining about.  It's an easy fix, and I might have spent longer than I should have just playing with it moving around that fast, it was rather amusing.  It's definitely going to take some getting used to and fine tuning of the settings, but I think this nifty little device is going to be a great addition to my workflow.  Now I just have to figure out what on my main rig is interfering with it and Studio. But I expect that's a conflict with one of my gaming apps that has an overlay in game like Steam does.

I disable the roll axis (like an airplane rolls to the side) as it's not useful in Daz Studio. 99% of the time I don't want a tilted camera. It's also easier to use like that especially in the beginning.

No idea about the issue you're having there sadly. The only issue I have, and that's a problem with the Daz Studio implementation only, is that movement is either on or off. You can't move slowly, which is a bit of a bummer given how finely you can control that with the device. Still, not complaining. Just happy it works at all, which isn't the case for all 3d apps out there.

Interesting detail: normally you can't navigate the viewport when a script window is open. Say Skin Builder or something. With the 3d mouse you still can smiley

I've been using it most of the day, and have to say I absolutely love it so far.  If I can ever figure out what on my main rig is stepping on it I'll probably wind up buying a second one of these.  I wound up cutting the sensitivity and speed on it way down in the control program to get it down to a useable speed, but it's still sensitive enough I have to be careful when I breathe if my hand is on the puck.

I'm going to have to check out the new drivers.  When I first bought my 3D Connexion, it was far too sensative and would go all over the place, so it wasn't useful to me.  Hopefully, the new drivers will bring in subtle control in D/S.

It's still extremely sensitive straight out of the box, but in the application for it you can go in and reduce the speed and the sensitivity (I had to cut it down almost to 0 on both).  It just takes a bit of tine tuning to get where you want it.  I've only been using it for today and I've already pretty much completely overcome the learning curve and am using it totally naturally already.

Actually just noticed what I wrote before is false, it's not just on/off there is some finer control. It's just that the initial movement isn't starting at zero, there's like a minimum speed and i can't go slower than that. This makes really small adjusmtents to a camera a bit hard. I only ever notice this when wanting to frame a render perfectly. I often resort to using the viewport icon for that last bit of correction. No biggie at all.

I stick mine down to the desk with double sided adhesive tape by the way. It wasn't really heavy enough to stay in place on its own.

Here are my settings that I've used forever, if it helps.

restarting DS enabled all functions except roll. Thanks for the tips here. It's still very sensitive but I think I'll get used to it. I'm left-handed and that's how I'll be using it, 2d mouse on the right side.
