Questions re adjusting lighting with Iray HDR

dracorndracorn Posts: 2,353

1.  How do make adjustments to the lighting color while using an HDR?

For example, I'm using Skies of Iradiance https://www.daz3d.com/skies-of-iradiance-sunset-hdris-for-iray

I love the sky color, but it saturates the environment with too much orange.  How do I calm that down - I can't find a temperature adjustment on the Render tab.

2.  Is there a way to use one sky so I can see it in the background while using a different environment (or maybe combine the two?)

The only thing I can think of is to lower the White Point or use a white Distant Light pointing from the front to soften the orange light.

For #1, in Tone Mapping, try Burn Highlights 0 and Crush Blacks .25 or higher. This will affect your entire render though, not just the HDRI.

If you have Tonal Rage, there are presets for a muted look that change those two properties. That's how I got those values.

Thanks for the tips; I will experiment.

What do you use to add a little extra light to highight a face?

For extra light on an object I would use a spotlight set to Disc or Plane and adjust the size or use a Primitive Plane set to Emissive and use it like a reflector.

Thanks Fishtales.  I will try that as well.
