Mesh Smoothing Not Working Properly

The mesh smoothing modifier doesn't seem to be working properly. It shows up and renders in the preview pain fine, but when I do an actual render there is no effect. The screenshot below shows the problem.

    Actually, it doesn't really show the problem all that well. Perhaps you could be a bit more specific. Are you referring to the hairline at the corner of the forehead? Exactly what did you apply smoothing to, the figure or the hair? Did you adjust iterations? Which figure/character are you using and which hair? Are you using "fit to" with the hair? The more information you provide, the better the answers are likely to be.

    If I have to take a shot in the dark, which I don't normally like to do, I'm guessing, since the issue is in the render and not in the preview, it is related to Subdivision aand/or displacement. What subdivision level are you using? What are your displacement settings?
