Excessive refraction?

I'm trying to make one of those glass monitors like you see in sci-fi movies but would hate to use in real life. Modeling and rigging I've got. But for some reason I seem to be getting way too much refraction off a 1/4" sheet of glass at IOR 1.55.

I've attached a screen shot from smooth shaded view and a sample render. Are my expectations wrong, or is something funky going on here?
