Using UV Mapper pro on a curved object

Hi everyone. I'm looking for a bit of help in mapping a curved model I created. It's nothing too fancy, just a shoulder guard for a human figure, but I've tried nearly every angle and or projection in UV Mapper pro, that I can think of in an effort to eliminate the stretching of the map at the poles and along the curved edges, with no luck. I just want a map that looks as if the skin of the model has been peeled off, and laid flat for me to apply my texture. I've attached pics of the model from several angles so you can see what it looks like.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks -

You could try Roadkill...it's free and does a pretty good job of flattening. Wings3D does as well. However, I don't think you're going to get a flat map unless you cut the backside into it's own island and you might have to cut at least partways into the shoulder portion to flatten out where it curves over the shoulder. If you're unsure what I'm talking about open a V4 or M4 head map and see where the back of the head has a cut vertically up the back to a point where the mesh doesn't curve so much anymore at the face.

Yes, it could be a bit tricky. I don't know of an easy way in UVM. But one tip you may not know is how to separate an object like that into inner / outer faces. Select it all and apply spherical mapping - BUT - when you hit OK, hold the SHIFT key down and it will split in the two sets of faces - inner and outer. Then you can remap them as you like.
It may be no use to you with this model, but it's very handy for some things.
I tried all kinds of things to find a working link to download Roadkill with no success. I'd love to give it a try, but I can't find anywhere to download it from.
And as for Wings 3D, that's my modeling program of choice! But sadly, it's UV mapping options are a mystery to me

I just re-downloaded Roadkill UV, so it is still available. You can get it here, and the Stand-alone version is the Maya version:

For Wings3D UV-ing, check out this great UV tutorial by our very own AgeOfArmour here (this should get you up to speed):

Go to http://www.pullin-shapes.co.uk/page6.htm
Page down to the Maya section. Download the 1.1 version. It's standalone. I use it regularly.
Do be advised that if you use Roadkill then designate your material zones after you do the uvs or Roadkill will obliterate all mat zones. I use Roadkill and Wings together all the time. Wings is usually the program I use to model in. While it's uv mapping is better than some, there are some things I can do easier in Roadkill, so I use the two together.
