[List of Wishes - I just purged mine] and starting anew. I am liking the new G8 stuff. Was tryiong to concentrate on G3, but there is something very attractive to the G8 characters. I think its that they actually have character. Seem more HD as well.

Really, I feel just the opposite as far as the HD part is concerned. Luckily much of the G3 stuff is interchangable for G8 use.
It's good to go back and purge the wishlist. Sometime's I'll look at something in mine and have no idea why I put it there. :p
That said, the first couple of G8 characters didn't impress me all that much, but the last few characters have definitely been more interesting. Overall, I think that it's fair to say that, were this an athletic contest, the G3 character Base Figures would totally kick the G8 character base's tails. That's especially true of the G3 men, who... with the notable exception of Elijah... are all more traditionally masculine and more powerfully built, while the G8 males have had more of an "everyday" normal guy feel.
It's harder to compare the G3 females directly to the G8s because, so far, G3 still has a much, much wider array of base body types available, but, again, it feels like the G8s are moving towards more natural everyday types while the G3's were more archetypical. And I think that's a good thing, as the difference in tech between the G3's and G8s is so ridiculously minor that there's little point in re-releasing the same themes again and again. What I'm mainly hoping for now is that we'll go back to the younger end of the pool and get a new male along the llines of G2M's Teen Jayden and an alternate teen feemale along the lines of G2F's Belle.
it does get very old replaying the same characters for every new generation. Same with clothes.
I find I don’t use older stuff especially clothing or characters. I purely use gen 8 male so I don’t bother keeping old figures on my wishlist.
I'm on the other end of the scale and tend to use whichever figure base system works best for the purpose. Right now that means that I'm still primarily using g2F for teen males, as that was the last figure DAZ produced where there was a lot of appropriate teen male clothing, and mostly G3M for older and ethnic males, as having the extremes of George and Ivan to dial really makes for some intersting characters though I'll probably be using g8M more now that there's Edward 8. Genesis is still a go-to for creatures, young kids and generic background characters and then I use a mix of G2-8 for the younger adult females and males, swapping skins and morphs around between the generations as necessary. Whatever works.
Once or twice a year, I go through and do ... well, less of a purge and more of a culling, pulling things I put on the wish list for projects that have fallen by the wayside and such. The problem is that often many of them end up back on the wish list in relatively short order as I come up with either a new take on the old project, or a new project that happens to require similar elements (I do a lot of Urban Fantasy. That covers a lot of ground.)
I do make an effort to purchase from the wish list when I'm looking for something, But there's only so much money in the hobby account.
One of the main things I keep on my wishlist (which is very small anyway) is hair, as most of them are highly transferable between generations, and they can be improved with products like OOT's shaders, although I think I have most of what I want by now in that department. There will always be the odd environment, prop, shader set and other background item, of course.
Even though I'd invested in G8, I still picked up quite a few G3 characters at the same time, which I'd missed through being out of the loop for a year or so. G3 is of course still highly usable and there is a lot of content for it (G8 is so great at wearing older gen stuff that I will probably continue to pick up the odd G3 costume set—in fact I did so only a couple of days ago).
I have a humongous wishlist and only remove things from it sporadically. I use content from all generations. I think it's fun to add life to old content and I can still use older stuff in Poser too, (which renders sooo much faster!)
I tend to "purge" as the sales come along. Like if something in my wishlist goes on a DEEP discount and I find myself still trying to decide if I want to buy it or not, then I usually just move it out of my wish list. If it's super cheap and I still find myself wavering on it, I probably don't want it enough to justify it being on my wish list.
I used to purge - but then I found myself coming back to something later when it was in a BYOB or something.
Now I wishlist anything I'm even a little bit interested in - so when there's a sale that has 96 pages, I can use the Daz Deals addon to 'Show only wishlisted' and save myself time. (Though there are still things I find by going through page by page if I have the time).
I initially opted to rid my wishlist of Genesis 3 characters after Genesis 8 launched, but after discovering how many workarounds were required with Genesis 8 in order to get the same level of functionality (clothes fits, eye realism) to which I'd grown accustomed (spoiled rotten thanks to Wear Them All) with Genesis 3, I put the most distinctive G3 faces back into my wishlist and picked them up at major discounts later.
Since I do a lot of multi-character renders, I generally use Genesis 3 and 8 exclusively, due to their lower polygons and faster load time. I use the handy notes section on my wishlist to remind me why I may have placed an otherwise inexplicable item on it.
