New hardware

Hi. I want to build new pc for rendering.

I need to know with components are most important in rendering.

I want to buy nvidia 1080 ti and i think it will do most of the job. Is CPU and RAM also important or can i just pick something cheap?

Any other suggestions ?

  • Rendering with? Assuming it's Iray, then yes the GPU is probably the most important component - as long as your scenes will fit into its memory. Whether you need to go all the way up to a 1080Ti, and whethjer even a 1080Ti will suffice, will depend on your scenes.

The amount of RAM should also reflect the size of your scenes. If you run out of RAM it will start swapping which will slow things down to a crawl, or even take the machine down. And there's not way to stop swapping before it finishes by itself (which may take hours, literally, in some cases) other than resetting the machine. I'd recommend at least 16 GB, that's also the recommended minimum for at 1080ti. If you plan on upgrading RAM later, get some large sticks (like 8 GB), so there's free slots left for more.

Also, be aware that prices of GTX cards are insane right now, 2-3 times normal price, because of cryptominers buying up all cards, so unless money is no problem I'd recommend waiting until things are back to normal. And beware of used cards, if they have been used for cryptomining their lifetime may be short, and there may be a lot of these cards on the market in the near future.

    Minimum specs imo

CPU with 4 cores and hyperthreading (AMD and Intel both do this)

RAM 16 GB, and not that great, but not bad at 16.

Motherboard that will take at least two Graphics cards. Preferably higher end as the PCIe lanes will be better; ideally PCIe X16, or X8

Good PSU; PSUs that blow up, can damage other components.

The best graphics card you can afford: imo 1080ti is a minimum, but budget will determine if you must have less.

Remember that Windows 10 reduces graphics card ram by about 20% (iirc).

I'm waiting to see what the new offerings from Nvidia are, but will likely go for a https://www.scan.co.uk/products/16gb-pny-nvidia-quadro-p5000-pascal-2560-cores-gddr5x-256-bit-288-gb-s-89-tflops-4x-dp-14-dual-slot- or whatever the next version is.

Not as fast as a 1080ti, but more RAM and W10 doesn't steal it; Graphics cards are useless when rendering in CPU.

... Think about what you want to do, what your scene sizes are now, but also how they develop.

  • Thanks for all the comments.  Right now I'm only learning and i can't say much about where it will take me.

One thing i know is that if i have to invest money in it then i want to buy something that will last few years.
