Can I add textures to primitive shapes?

Can I add textures to those primitive blocks you can create on DAZ3d?

Sure.  In the Surfaces pane, in the diffuse parameter, click the dropdown arrow to the left of the diffuse color, then click browse, then browse to an image you want to apply to the cube.  It will be wrapped around the cube, so you will need to determine which part part of your image corresponds to which face of the cube to create your own map (there's probably a texture template for a cube out there somewhere to save you some time.)

Or you can select the surface and than apply a shader to it.

Yes. You can see the mapping by selecting the material in Surfaces, then go to UV View in the viewport's camera drop-down menu.

Btw, if you need odd shapes that you can't do in DS, I have a pack of Everyday Morphing Primitives which might be useful.

I like to add this link Creating UV Templates.

If you start texturing stuff its always good to have a Template also called Seam Guide or UV-Template.

    @ Creating UV Templates

Its a free script from Mcasual. You have to go to Surfaces pane and select one or more surfaces then use this script. (create Templates right within DazStudio)

Also a good scripts for changing UV for DazStudio mcjPlanarUV  mcjSphericalUV DS.
