Forum Spell Check - Solved

...I was wondering is there anyone who monitors/programmes the forums who can update the dictionary for the spell check?  Often times when I check a typo what should be one of the logical suggestions does not show in the pop up menu options.  For example "teh" or "hte" (very common typos for "the") brings up a number of different suggestions, but none of them being the actual word "the".  I have noticed this for other common typos as well, so often I find I still have to do a good amount of hand correction (not good when one is dyslexic) .

I also am wondering why the the browser spell check (which is always on) cannot be used instead.

...I tried that early on but having to wade through all the script codes (which also are flagged as typos) to find the actual words to fix makes the process all that much more tedious.  I don't see why the forum software needs to block out the browser's default spell checking.  It doesn't on other forums.

What drives my to distraction is FB & such on my iPhone keeps wanting to autocorrect everything as in my life revolved around 'apps' and 'movies' and such things. Most things people are saying has nothing to do with movies and such.

What do you mean? All it does is re-enable the browser's spell check feature, just like you wanted. You don't have to wade through script codes. It will underline the incorrect words, and give you the same suggestions it gives you elsewhere, all done by the browser's default spell checking.

KK if you don't want spell check checking HTML code then turn the WYSIWYG function of the editor back on.

...interesting (opened up a post in source), as when the forums changed to the current software, going into source it also flagged the codes.  Of course that was under a much older version of FF so maybe with all the revisions and updates, that got cleaned up.

Oh, you're viewing the message as source code? You don't need to do that unless you want to fine-tune the way the message looks. The browser's spell checker works fine without having to open to the source code.

Check out Grammarly. It might be what you're looking for. The free version has a plugin for browsers that does that, and it'll be part of any forum or page where you type once it's installed. I quite like it.

Wouldn't help if they did update it. Every forum spell-checker I've seen treats 'colour', 'metre', and 'cheque' as typos.wink

Yes, those spell checkers are poorly written. Plenty of people in the US grew up with those spellings. They are valid American English. One gets the ideal some editors at some publishing houses proofing dictionaries are being ....

It's like the spell checker can't handle two correct spellings? Even zoology and scientific nomenclature have multiple spellings for some things. It's like the programmers that argue about how to indent and format source code when it's still the same thing.

Gonna "go there" and ask how do you know it's not correct? :P

Seriously though, I also have mild dyslexia. It's no fun when you're a musician, either, because it affects musical notation and tablature numbers just like words and letters.

OTOH, I have a cousin who is dyslexic and she learned several programming languages, including RPG IV, which she said was very taxing.

You gonna go there and be facetious, how about "Dyslectics of the world, untie!" :P

...well this one actually does have a UK dictionary (click on the "Languages" option in the drop down menu).  Just disappointed and annoyed that it doesn't give the correct suggestions for relatively common typos (like the examples I mentioned) that are the same in either version of English, which the FF spell checker does do (and it also has a "proper English" setting).

...because the spell checker here flags them as a typo but doesn't offer the correct spelling suggestion unlike say MS Word or FF.

If you've never installed any of the scripts, then follow step 1, which is in the left column. After that, you click on the ones you want from the right column, click the "Install" button, and you're done. When you install the enable browser spell checking script, it will simply underline the incorrect words, just like on any other webpages, and you can ctrl+right-click on the underlined word to get the browser's suggestions.

..OK working...well, to a point.  Whenever I right click to get the correction suggestion menu, all it does is pop up a small window that says "Paste".

You need to hold down the control key while right clicking. This is the only difference. Ctrl+right click will give you the suggestions that you are already used to.

The Release date is useful. Encrypted items just ran out today, there is not a single encrypted item in the store at the moment. If they ever come back, that script is going to be useful again, too. :)
