iRay vs 3Delight Rendering

I haven't used iRay alot so I am not sure what settings to use here, but I am trying to figure out how to get iRay lighting to match 3Delight.  Right now the iRay render is really dark compared to the 3DL.  Do I need to use an entirely different lighting setup for iRay?  Any ideas?

Thanks

...a good part has to do with tonemapping and lighting.

First of all what lights are you using in Iray?  Next are you using any HDR environment to provide ambient lighting?

Iray has more in common with photography as it uses physically based lighting, so "the three main controls to use are "shutter speed", "film speed" (ISO), and "aperature" (fstop)

Start with going to the Render tab, set render engine to iRay, click on the editor sub tab , and click on Default.  This will give you standard mid afternoon light.  Remove any skydomes (they work very differently in Iray),  Next, delete any 3dlight lights, (they work very differently in Iray)...notice a theme here? Do a test render.  In the case of your image, make a big plane primitive, apply the defaulit iRay shader, set Emission to grey and Lumins to 5000.  Move the plane so that its flat side is facing your character but the plane is out of camera view.  Do a test render.  That should take you 80% of the way

  • One thing about iray is that you often have to crank the lights up to 100,000 + a string of 0's lumens to get the same light intensity

Ok, checked iRay settings and set to defaults.  Deleted all previous lights.  I created the plane but I don't see a default iRay shader to apply.  In my shader folder I found iRay and there was one for Emmisive, so I tried that, but it doesn't seem to be lighting the scene right.

So I was using just basic 3 point light setup for the 3DL test render.  But I deleted that now.  On the camera, I see the f/stops setting and aperure blades tab, but don't see any shutter speed.  Also, have never used any HDR before.

The default iRay shader is in the Default Resources for Daz Studio > Shaders > Iray Uber Base.  Now for lights,   Create>  New Spotlight .... If you right click on the light in the scene, you can point it at the figure.... adjust brightness in Luminous Flux (lumens) and color in Temperature...   Truthfully, I probably would just use a night time HDRI  with a little light to make things glint.

Also, if you have a skydome in the scene, you might have to delete that, as it will block the HDRI and distant lights.

Or just set tonemapping to a normal indoors setting.

...this is all on the render settings tab.  What it sounds like you are looking at is the camera settings in the Parameters tab.

Select Tone Mapping and you will see the controls Shutter Speed (1/x)  F/Stop, and Film ISO are just below Exposure Value

In the Environment settings (just below tone mapping) is where you would put an HDR Environment Map.  Usually there is a default one in there. Since your scene is apperantly set in a back alley it isn't critical that you have one however without one you will have no Global iIllumination (ambient lighting).

Were you using the AoA Advanced lights in the 3DL version?

Here's a quick 101 for "how do make emissive light panes": https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/1537206/#Comment_1537206

If you scroll down a few posts, it also deals with Rendersettings. But it's just a really quick 101.

..once you follow the instructions in that in the link BeeMKay provided, you can reduce the opacity of the plane to something like 0.0001 so it won't be seen in the render and it will still produce the light you need.  This is how to make what is known as a "ghost light".

Ok.  So I got the plane emmisive to work properly I think.  So here is a screenshot of that.  But I still can't figure out how to add an HRI.  There isn't one define in Environment.  With 3DL, I just was using Uberenvironment, key light, rim light and side light.

Under render settings you add it to the Environment Map

..that looks much better.  Coming from in front all the sculpting on the the suit was lost and it looked flat.

UE gave you your global Illumination or "Ambient" light, the tradeoff being a higher cost in render time.  There are a number of "night" HDRs available, some which are free. Again since there is no sky or horizon  visible in the scene as it is in a dead end alleyway, resolution of the HDR image is not all that critical. Just make sure the "dome" is larger than the set.

So I got some HDRs today from the DAZ store.  Installed through DIM, but can not seem to find them in Smart Content panel.  How do I apply one of these?

When I'm trying out HDRI's on my scenes, to cycle through them I go to the Render Settings tab, then Presets, then the Render Settings group, you "should" find all your HDRI maps there, though occasionally 1 or 2 may go A.W.O.L. :)

Generally, I see them in render settings...
