Base Figure Selection

I am doing a project which involves using Daz3D to create figures. I do not require "photorealism". It would actually make things more difficult. What I need is maximum flexibility in morphing, clothing, posing and expressions.

While I have a few different base figures, I have found I am wasting a lot of time learning the quirks of each. Some works with some content but not with others. I have decided to work with just one base figure (male/female).

I would like to some opinions as to which base figure would offer me the greatest flexibility to create new characters.

Others may disagree with me on this but IMO Genesis 1 is the most versatile and cost effective generation. It can be male or female or creature or child, whatever you want. And there are loads of full body- face- and creature morphs as well as characters/clothing/skins in the store. If you don't want the new shiny and aren't going for ultra realism I recommend looking into G1.

You're going to have to prioritise one of those things over another, as there isn't a single figure that will maximise everything. It's kinda like asking for a car with maximum speed, fuel economy, cross-country ability and carrying capacity.

Morphing - it's not clear to me exactly what you want here. Are you looking for a figure to apply your own morphs to, or are you looking for one with lots of morphs available in the store? As Sven says, G1 has the advantage of being unisex, so it may be your best bet.

Clothing - If "flexibility" means having lots of clothing available, then V4/M4 is probably still your best bet. There are products that will allow you to put older figures' clothes on newer figures (and, to some extent, vice versa). Your specific requirement probably calls for a particular type of clothing, which might be best served by some other figure - check the store first to find out.

Posing - The latest figures - G3 and G8 - have the most sophisticated posing capabilities. If you're looking for volumes of pre-made poses, older is better - but again you can apply older poses to new figures with a little tweaking.

Expressions - G3 and G8 have bones in the face that allow you to make your own expressions more easily than in previous generations. All generations of figures have their own set of products containing facial expression morphs, but they can't be applied cross-generation as easily as you can clothes and poses.

Just wanted to add that M4/V4 clothes and accesories fit to G1 out of the box, the clones especially the V4 is quite good. Same goes for skins as G1 uses the V4 uv-map by default.
