Resolution of render

Hi,

I finally put together a scene and rendered it using the default render settings.  The .png file it produced was rather unsatisfactory because the resolution is 512 X 512 pixels in size.  This is just too low to show the desired level of detail.  I haven't yet put in any lights and have not yet learned how to use the camera.  How do I increase the resolution?  I am aware that this will probably increase the render times.
