Changing Surfaces within a animation

Is it possible to change  surface options within a animation, using keyframing? I would assume it's only possible with some scripts so far.

    Shader Mixer, at least for 3Delight and I think for Iray, does give access to time/frame number which can be used to drive an animated effect.
