rectangular and lasso selections

Hexagon version: 2.5.1.79

When I try to select anything (vertices, faces, etc) with rectangular or lasso mode, I don't see the rectangle or lasso line and nothing gets selected.  I can only drag the pointer or click to select.  What am I not doing correctly?

The right mouse button is used with rectangle and lasso select.
