Parenting items

It used to be that when I parented one item to another - say, a pencil held in a character's hand - it would stay in the same orientation to the object it is parented to as I had set it in originally. For a few months now however whenever i parent one thing to another it suddenly shifts at seeming random in all three directions and sometimes location; forcing me to orient it all over again (and usually with much increased difficulty). Does anyone know why parenting is so much more difficult now and I can do to fix this aggravating tendency? It really compplicates things a lot when exact positioning is important for poses needing adjusting with new renders when making a series/set..

  • Make sure that Parent in palce is on - it's a checkbox at the bottom of the Change Parent dialogue if you are using that, or a checkable item in the Scene pane option menu (lined button in the top corner or right-click the tab) if you are dragging and dropping.

I see it. Was that always there? Seems to me i don't recall having to click on that box before; though it would not be the first time i have missed the obvious. :-/

But yeah that must be the problem. Thanks for helping this old duffer out once again. :-)

  • It's always been there, but it's sticky - so if it was on (which I think is the default) until recently you wouldn't have had to do anything. Maybe you turned it off for some reason, or just caught it with a stray click, recently.

Could be. If there is a way to mess something up; I'm always the one who will stumble upon it! lol

Thanks again for your prompt responses, and Merry Christmas (or whichever variation pleases you most).
