I buy when things are on at least 40-50% sale cos of the abominable exchange rate (it adds 50% to whatever I buy to get it in NZ$...a $10US item will cost me $15NZ plus a foreign currency fee) and a nice men's outfit or character hits the cart so fast it leaves streaks and I'll go without food rather than miss it.

    At least there's no GST . . . . yet.

I took an art history class ages ago and it struck me how many FEMALE figures were depicted in art compared to MALE figures. It seemed to me that there were a lot more paintings and such being made of females than males - despite males being the "ruling sex" in most cultures (historically speaking). I think that's something that has been pretty common throughout human history. Why? I have no idea. ...Or maybe my art history teacher just like to showcase and talk about female art more? *shrug* It would be really interesting to do some type of study to see if what seems like a lot more female art throughout history is actually the case or not.

I actually have a theory about this but I'm pretty sure I'd start a fire if I went into detail about it. Suffice to say, the male gaze dominates. Straight dudes want to ladies to be naked for them. Kind of like the Ferengi on Star Trek.

Eeee'yup. This can be a pretty sexist and problematic hobby, and that's just on the best of days.

That said, I do agree with AA that the quality of stuff has gone... downhill somewhat. At least, in terms of clothes. The female stuff is getting even more same-y and nothing's changed with males. Not to mention most of it just looks and feels.... cheap. I do long the days where things and trends weren't dictated by 2 major stores and there were things like personal storefronts and smaller stores for 3D assets. I wasn't around during those times, but seeing archived versions makes me realize that content creators had a lot more freedom to make whatever they wanted and not be beholden to popular trends. Seemed to be a lot more experimentation back in those days, too. I've found a lot of older items that would otherwise never be made these days.

(That said, one of my favorite vendors -Uzilite- has apparently gone completely indie and is selling through Gumroad now, which is nice)

And chalk me up as another frustrated consumer that's learning the DIY approach, too. When you have tools like Marvelous Designer at your disposal, much less other programs like Blender and Hexagon, well...

I do like that we're getting some decent environments and props: like the mobility equipment from a while back. I'd love to see a follow-up that has things like wheelchairs, canes, prosthetics, and maybe even non-mobility items like cochlear implants. I'd much rather take practical things like those over the umpteenth pose set of so-called "sexy" poses that make Vicky look less sexy and more like she needs to see a freaking chiropractor.

LoL...."(insert sexy adjective of choice) model poses for ( insert character of choice)" which contain maybe a slight variation of every other pose set of a similar name for all other generations.   I might be more inclined to buy a new set called  "normal people standing around, looking average.". Nothing wrong with model poses, but I think I must have at least 20 of the same pose set under different names.

As to why more female items, I can't say the underlying cause. But when I attended art school, women overall preferred drawing or sculpting women subjects as much as the men.  Even the gay men seemed to prefer female subjects.  Maybe women are just more fun to design for.??

...for poses I only purchase what are called "everyday poses", action poses, scene based poses, and pose building kits. If it has "sexy", 'pinup", or "alluring" in the title, I steer clear.

Sorry.. I spent the first half of the year with serious health issues, and then my content server died, and then my computer died - twice.  Lost two entire products that were almost done, had to restart another one I had started, managed to get one full product uploaded and a couple freebies but of course, it takes a while for things to get into the store.  It's been a terrible year, I hope the next one is better.

MAYBE since males being the ruling sex in most cultures in history, they make the decision on the art they are buying? (I mean in the end most arts are on sale/auction) and having female in art tends to attract more male buyers... or maybe I am just plain wrong lol

Throughout the ages what is popular to illustrate figure-wise  really depends on the culture, and the attitudes of the time and who is paying for the art.. IE who the patron is.

I can't say I've noticed that women as a whole are largely illustrated more in a historic sense when it comes to the human figure. I would probably give the lions' share of the art themes to religious and mythological art and portraiture.  In recent times there was an upswing towards art featuring beautiful women, but I wouldn't consider that trend to be something that is historically true or even representative of art as a whole.

Warning! Contains sexy poses like Vicky looking at her watch. laugh

I particularly like the "sexy pose" where it looks like she's sniffing her armpit to see if she needs deodorant. hahah

I know, I know, that's not what the pose is supposed to be, but I swear that's what I thought it was at first glance. lol

Excellent points...Males were certainly featured as much if not more than females during antiquity.  And, later portraiture often had the commissioner of the art shown in some religious setting or referenced back to an earlier work.  So yeah, even though the female form is highlighted in modern culture, it probably hasn't been the preferred subject that far back.

People tend to notice things more when they are interested in the subject matter or if they dislike the subject matter. We are exposed to so much art on a daily basis that probably doesn’t contain sexy women that we just don’t see... but  is there and influences our perceptions in the form of advertisements. Art that contains women is an obvious hook for some which is why it is used frequently. Art that contains images we don’t like is also an effective tool.

I think the upswing in beautiful female art which might have been more taboo  years ago is has to do with a society shift in values. Pinup and sexy art is no longer terribly taboo to illustrate or own  in some countries and  is now much more commonplace. Porn is likewise accessible and popular  Females are enjoying more prominent roles in books and literature and modern art reflects that.

Images that depict men in heroic fashion also still exist but have fallen slightly less in favor  as many male teens prefer female characters and female game icons than they use to. There is still a healthy chunk of male figures in prominent roles in comics and books and film of course ... but females characters ate definitely more popular than they once were.

  • I think we are doing the normal/traditional/whatever split.

Men are the resources, women are the caretakers/sexualized prize.
You don't notice the non-sexual - 8-billion images of men 'doing stuff'. Hello. Riding horses to victory, fighting battles, sitting on trophies, posing in paintings, looking regal. We just go, yeah. ---->

men aint depicted as sexual objects so it's unbalanced.

Niche market for a man doing the duck face.

No one noticed that men take 'selfies' it's them showing off a resource....JUST THEIR hand holding a new pair of sneakers. Just the picture of the sunset. Their dog on the bed, but women to show new shoes, have them on and or posed sexy and to show off a new haircut, there has to be cleavage. A guy just shows a close up of his chin to show younhis new beard or just the top of his head to show a new haircut.

Men show what they CAN get, women show what you'll get. Gross, I know, but pretty accurate. The store follows that.

The only wrinkle is the overall popularity of the female form makes the PAs give them all the action-non action. Yeah she's sexy while holding the gun/sword/dressed for battle- fighting in jello etc.....

Armor, space suits - all still sexy...Sexy pirate outfit- cause there were soooo many of those......

And now notice, whenever (not whenever, but a lot) they do have men doing idle stuff- sexy stuff, the sexuality goes the other way to follow the switched gender role.

    random observations.

    1) Delay the arrival of Genesis 8. - Make it arrive FOR CHRISTMAS or be the big end of the year celebration.

    2) Have compatibility already sorted. The new figures need to be able to wear EVERYTHING (shoes, shirts - etc and poses and..and...)

    3) If someone can create a script and use a bunch of complicated instructions to force compatibility, then it could have been included. We got all those old genesis legacy shape-type-products and such- Daz should have had the T-pose included with the A-pose so we could get clothes to work out the gate. Then there would be no need to pause before jumping on the new generation. So why jump?

As far as I know, Autofit clones included in the G8 Starter Essentials could handle the pose difference. The big complaint seems to have been the reduced compared to previous generations choices within Autofit, which were supposed to to have been reduced because of increased intelligence in the Autofit algorithms used.

    4) here comes the gimmick. Make D-Force be (at launch) strictly for the generation 8 clothing. Make all the new clothing Gen8 ready. That way, we automatically know what clothing has it and also know anything before 'Required product: Genesis 8 Male/Female' doesn't have D-Force active. For those who don't want to bother with trial and error- there's an easy reason and clear line down the center. You can make additional d-force compatible items as some kind of growing list.

Not sure I get what you mean here, since dForce as it currently stands is added to the surfaces, and isn't dependent on anything specific to a figure generation.

    5) The compelling reason to embrace 8 should be quality. (not just that everything coming out is 8 or bust). The tight launch window left only the newest crafted figures at launch and they all looked too much like the base figure. Now that some time has passed and vendors have been given time, look how great all the figures look now.

    -------------------------

For me, not only is 8's clothing look like simplified clothes that are already in the store, I can ONLY use them with Generation 8 characters.

    Doesn't make sense either way.

    A) If you consider the customer base to be long time shoppers-  how do you intend to keep selling Gen 8 (exclusive) gear for the (presumed) small number of gen 8 characters they/we own?

    B) If they are NEW users, then why keep putting all the old(est) stuff on sale when it's NOT FULLY compatible with their shiny new characters?

    ----------------------

I bought a bunch of gen 8 items and clothing and still no way to get compatibility months later.

So that's it for Gen 8 clothing until this gets sorted out.

I think you're missing that SickleYield told us how to very simply use content for G8 on G3 and visa versa not long after G8 Female was released.

    --------------

Hard to quote with quotes, but here we go.....

    The Key word is marketing.

    1) Daz could have insured resources were in place (PA powered accounted for). They debuted with morphs, they could have debuted with compatibility products. Apparently, bodily concerns are more important than overall content. We'll get HD skin blemishes for Generation 8 before we get the ability to wear ALL of the products you already own or get your NEW clothes to work all across your library of characters..

    2) Many say that oh so little of the Daz customer base checks the forum, but then we want to solve the Problem of Compatibility with an obscure post on the forum. Who, When, What and Where? So, if I wasn't around on the three days that thread was alive, I'd never know. Much different than if Daz had an official product that shows up in the Daz store.

    3) Marketing.

This LOOKS like it's dforce is FOR Generation 8 clothing. It might be matter of fact that since- all new articles are Gen 8 and Dforce is coming on new items (obviously), it's already the impression that the two are linked.

Now, imagine if they came out at the same time! That's the point.

    4) I've seen this before and it might actually work that now, so many older items seems to be wonky. The store is becoming recycled items for a new generation.

And unfortunately there's no reason to get new versions of items you already own. iRay made that an attractive thing to do. But why now? So many times I see a new item and I think it's the old, similar item on sale or an iray added texture/shader. I've done it before, by accident, buy the same thing for Genesis 3 and later, for Genesis 2, when it was put on sale and didn't realize I already own it.

Now, I always use ATIs add-on to check what I already own from a vendor before buying old stuff.

I personally took the road this time that I won't just buy things by the cool factor but be more specific in my decisions. I purposely bought the Michael 8 Pro pack....which got me some other cool booty in the process. I have bought other male packs before female most of the time this go'round. I don't have a huge income so my money probably won't drive the market....but I have tried to use it this time to vote as well as get cool stuff! In the past for me it hasn't been to favor the female characters more because I didn't want male stuff but most of the artists that I regularly support produce more female stuff....and it is such coooooool stuff that my will power gives out waiting. I went into this round resolved to focus my purchases.

We can only go by sales and the female is way out in front and that what the market data is saying. I don't think there is an agenda, it's what ever is selling the most. Any business would do the same follow the money. I will say daz does put out more female characters no question about it.

I have to admit I purchase and use female models much more than males ones, but I do primarily pinups and my graphic novel I'm creating has three female lead characters (which I'm proud of, because historically comics and movies are male dominated.) Ironically, Daz is the only place where males are less popular, where males are the minority and Black characters may be more liked than White ones. The topsy turvy difference between Daz and the rest of the U.S. is quite interesting..

But the issue I'm having with G8 males, is that I don't personally find them physically attractive. In general, I will buy some male characters as "character actors," like George or Ivan, but my lead characters have to look like someone I would personally date and I have not found that in G8 Daz Originals so instead, purchased a bunch of morphs so that I can create my own characters, which I do anyway with female characters, come to think of it, but I will often mix several characters, along with morphs to make my own, but with G8 males, which I haven't even used yet, I will create my own characters from scratch with morphs because I was not happy with the base characters except Darius, which I will buy when on better sale in the future.

In any case, @Midnight-stories, you will always get my money, because I LOVE your products, my graphic novel is sci-fi and if I could afford it, I'd buy out your whole store! Now that I finally purchased a Windows (yuck) PC with NVIDIA card (that I still need to set up!), I can finally start doing renders that don't take 48 hours and can catch up with my rendering, especially YOUR products!

Personally, I think Daz has to come up better looking base characters for G8. I did end up buying most female pro bundles when on the best sale, but they were for the clothes, not the characters. It is easy to create ugly ducklings like Stephanie 8 ourselves with morphs, but much harder to create beauties. I personally like creating my own characters, but I'm sure many people would like attractive characters out of the box, it's much easier to uglify a character than beautify it! Luckily PAs pick up the beauty slack for females, but I still not have seen any G8 base male characters that I personally like. And what's with no hair on the body? I'm going to have to go into Photoshop and put hair on all male bodies that were created since G2. Do all guys wax now? I live in LA and don't even see that much waxing. I liked the body hair of M4, why can't we go back to that??? And so far I still like M4's face the best too. And if V4 could bend better, she'd still be my favorite female base character...

  • I've just rendered G8M in basic G8F poses and vise versa. I'd say, the difference is a bit demoralizing.

Many of the sexy female poses have always reminded me of a child needing to go to the bathroom urgently; which is not sexy.

Funnily all three of the male poses you picked are also "sexy model" poses but they didn't come across that way to me on G8F. Wonder why.

No, it just happens that the technology was made available after G8 was released, so clothing will naturally be focused on that. The actual tech is not directly related to the figure, and it's been shown to work on figures and clothing of other generations.

I've just rendered G8M in basic G8F poses and vise versa. I'd say, the difference is a bit demoralizing.

Thank you, this made me laugh so much! I mostly use male poses on my females, because the female poses are usually beyond ridiculous..especially the extremely arched backs..

    ...I've done the same.

I think it could have all been solved or avoided if the compatibility issues were sorted out before launch.

There weren't any; Daz has never supported using new Generation content on older figures. That has always been PA work.

And a few clever marketing gimmicks.

That's the point.

...indeed, they released a holiday freebie for a Mil Dog sweater. Now that is a real "old school" model.

@fisty  Oh wow, you sure fit the saying "If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all." Sorry to hear about the health issues and computer / product woes. And we always appreciate your freebies, very generous. Will be good to have you back!  yes

I don't know how I missed this post. Oy - Fisty! I'm so sorry you're having such a tough year!  sad

Where you not able to salvage any of the two products that you lost? Losing TWO entire products - UGH!

I hope that things are looking up for you. And I hope that your health is better. *big hugs*
