Weird Iray Issue

So I was trying to render a shot of my TOS Trek ship USS CONDOR earlier Saturday, and I usually play with the render settings to get better results. After the first render, I wasn't satisfied and re-rendered.  It then suddenly started rendering without actually rendering anything! Now after all this time, if I make ANY adjustments to the Iray settings instead of leaving things at the default settings, it simply won't render anything, even though it goes through the motions of doing so. Does anybody have any idea what may be going on? It's EXTREMELY frustrating, especially since this started happening comepletely out of the blue last night.

I have that kind of problem with some scenes.

I have no clue why. Usually I save the scene as a subscene and re-import it to a new empty scene. Most of the time it does the trick and works fine.

I'd love to find out why because it is really annoying.

  • The camera is unmoved? Nothing in the log (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log) after rendering? Are you not even getting the render window?

    It's happening with any scene.

I never use the cameras, just the active viewport. I've not let it completely render, since the render window never shows anything. No error messages. The render window appears, but nothing appears in it. But like I said, if the settings are left default, it'll work fine.

When you say the window has nothing in it, is the window black or does it have the chequerboard that is there when the window first appears?

If the window is black it could be a lighting problem. If you have switched off the dome lighting, you don't have any lights in the scene and the headlamp is switched off you will get a black render since there is no light. It might also happen if the lights are at too low an intensity for the exposure setting. If it is the chequerboard then something else is happeneing. This would happen if there were no objects in front of the camera, I can't think of anything else that would cause this, although I sometimes find that with complicated scenes the chequerboard stays there and I don't get an image for some time, even after the progress window has said it has rendered something several times.

I get the checkerboard. And if I switch to 3Delight it renders OK even if the shaders are iray only.

The window has the checkerboard pattern. I never use cameras, I always line up my shot in the viewport without a camera. And as I said, if I have the irays settings at defaults, it renders fine. It's when I adjust them to where I normally use them that it does this.

The only time I have seen it go black is if I use interactive instead of Photoreal.  I cannot remember why exactly but it has to do with certain light types not rendering at all under interactive mode.
