iRay Render - Optimisation: Max Path Length ?

Seeking answer as to what this is about.  Is there a reference that can tell me about it, please ?

I note it is at default value = -1

When I change it to 1, my rendered figure turns out completely black.

Just keep it at -1 (default; unlimited light transport path). You can read about Iray max path length from Nvidia's documentation. If you really want to use this option, set it to at least 3.

Setting it too low and eyes also wont render properly. I keep mine at 10 which seems to be a good setting for most renders.

  • I think 6 is the absolute minimum for Genesis 3 eyes - I haven't checked Genesis 8, which has a modified eye structure.

the main benefit of a value other than -1 is that in theory your render will go quicker. Clearly 1-5 are not a good option for any render with a person in it, but 8+ should look identical (or near to) a value of -1, but render quicker. You have to try it and see

I don't know how much it speeds up renders but it speeds up the removal of fireflies.
