Finding the Obj for the Pose Folder MAT (Poser Library)

K this may seem like an odd question but I dont know how to find an object related to the Material.

I see these top and shorts MATS in my Poser Pose Folder. but I cant remember what they go to. This happens all the time. The name of the Pose folder, is by the artist who made the MATS, and their named, Top1 Top 2 Top 3. Ect. So, searching for the item its related to isnt going to happen. Is there a way to find what obj file the MATS are related to? My Poser Library is really big and theres just no way to remember every tiny detail of every tiny thing I own... Especially if you havnt used it in over a year.

Thats partly why I stopped using my Poser Library. You get a hair prop. You gotta surf threw 5 folders to get to the hair. And then back all the way out. Then go to the materials. Scroll waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down cause you have 7000 folders in your Pose folder. Get the hair materials... Then back all the way out. Go to Props. scroll down, load the hair accessories props if there is one. its a proccess just getting 1 item in the scene...

Thats if you can even find it in your pose folder later on... Cause its impossible to remember

!MAT!_

It's like, what the hell?...

Or whats even more fun is when a Material artist has to have their MATS under their own little special name instead of putting their Material expansion in the folder for said item...

Hey I have this top. I have 4 expansions for it from 3 artists... Why is my shirt spread out all over my library all crazy?.. Put it in the right folder!

If your a Material Vendor and your reading this. Seriously... Stop. It's annoying. You can still get your name out by putting your expansion in the correct folder. Theres no need to have shoes here, and my expansion for it a mile up my clothing library.

Well, they easiest way is if you use Cathegories. That is "one time work", but you can categorize all content that belongs together. So you can have the obj, the mats and the poses for something in one folder&subdirectories. Whenever you buy something new, you simply categorize it straight away.

The advantage is that you can structure everything the way you want, while the files remain where they are. And you invest the work one time, and next time you look for something, you just have to head into the subcatgory (like -clothing-M4-Suits) and find all items in their own subcategory neatly with everything. Yes, it's work, but it's totally worth it, in comparision to have several hundred or thousand dollars worth of content just wasting there.

As for finding the item in question, I sometimes have "strays"; if I know they are DAZ content, you can try the readme section, and at least for newer items, you can find a file listing, that will guide you to where the various files are located. If not, you are back to searching.

If you want to go the category option, perhaps the best way would be to uninstall all the unused content, and reinstall it in small batches that you can then categorize directly.

I may just scrap my entire Poser Library and do something like that. Daz folders are tolerable but poser... omg... wow! just... wow!... There is NO strucure to poser file paths at all... Zero, none, zip! It's like they intentionally made it a headache... I really kinda want to just start over rather then sort but.. ugh! Bolth options are equally undesireable.

True... I'm often scratching my head at the total naming chaos when categorizing. But on the bright side, you will find out what you actually have. smiley

Though, be careful with just deleting the Runtime directory, as it also contains the materials and stuff for DAZ figures.

Another nice thing about doing your own categorization is that you can put items in multiple categories.  This is especially helpful if you kit bash.  For instance, I have a category for say a fantasy outfit for v4.  It goes into People/V4/Clothing/ Outfits/Fantasy Medieval/ Name of Clothing with Mats as a subfolder.  Then each item of the outfit would also go into a corresponding kit bashing folder that might look like this People/V4/Clothing/Boots & Shoes/Name of Item with a mats subfolder.  I dump every shoe and boot into the boots & shoes so I can see everything i have in one spot and drop the materials for them under the name in that folder.  If you want to see some examples of how I have it set up you can see some of my categories here.  Its about halfway down.  There is also an example for Dracorn, she does her a bit differently than mine.

I haven't got rid of my Poser library, I've just moved everything into a system that makes sense to me.  So if I want to work with Genesis 2 Females, I have EVERYTHING related to Gen2 females in one spot.  Characters, clothing, utilities, hair, etc etc.  Cuts way down on the amount of time I spend looking for things.  Especially in the Poser file.

I think Poser used insist on each content type being it's own part of the library. It is a lot more flexible now but most content creators are still sticking to the old layout. As far as I can see you can have any type of content in any of the main library folders and you can have nested subfolders (I haven't found a depth limit). The only requirement is that everything has to be under one of the recognised top level folders: Character, Pose, Props, Camera, Light, Face, Hand, Materials or Scene (and details like Pose without an s and Props with an s are required).

I've started re-arranging my Poser runtime folders moving materials, poses and mat poses to be subfolders of the things they apply to and re-naming them, creating folders for types of clothes or types of set etc. This layout works in Poser and Daz Studio.

I use catergries for Daz Studio content. The Daz Studio library is usually more logical but there are some problems like some sets being under environments and some under props, some shaders not saying if they are 3Delight or Iray etc.
