Cant seem to get my underwater scene to render in Iray
Hi folks:
I've got the following problem. I use Ultramarine Ocean and rigged water, for a lot of my images. Interestingly enough when I do a render in Open GL the render is instantaneous and NOT half bad looking, but when I try to do the render in Nvidia I only get a black screen. Yes I do use lighting, like a good spot light over my figure or a distance light, but nothing seems to come through. The other thing I should mention is the render is not that complex. In one instance I used the circular water volume mass in rigged water and put a Gen 3 snorkeler roughly in the middle - nothing happened but a black render screen. Any suggestions of insights on what I could be missing or doing wrong? Thanking you all in advance for all your help and insight. XO

I believe that prop is 3Delight only.
Yes, sadly that one only works propely in 3Delight. I have tried to convert it to Iray, because it is a great environment, but it simply wouldn't work.
What I tried was, converting the lights to Iray lights (otherwise you get zero lights), converted the textures, added a volumetric cube... in the end, you don't get the same effect.
A suggestion is, render the ocean separatly in 3Delight, and then render your diver, and try to fudge it together in Photoshop or Gimp. Alternately, convert the diver materials to 3Delight.
Actually, I loaded this again earlier today, and did the following:
1. delete all lights (bve careful with the ocean light, only delete the distant light, not the gobo
2. convert the dome to Iray emissive and crank up the light to 100 k/cm²
3. move the ocean gobo into the ocean dome (not sure if I'll actually be able to get the gobo effect by that)
4. set the render settings to scene only
The result worked somewhat, but it's nothing even close to thhe effect you get with the 3DL version, so... I still stand by that this set can't be used easily by Iray. Of course, if you put some more time and effort into it, you might be able to get a proper result.
Thanks for your great suggestion gang. I didnt realize that the ultramarine environ was 3Delight - HELL no wonder my OpenGL renders look sooooo nice, heheehehehehe. Oh well mabye I will suggest that in new products. Ta for now gang and thanks for being sooo awesomeXO
