Render Farm / Networking Question

OK, I was wondering if someone could tell me if I can network my computers together to speed up renders? What I see in the forums about render farms seems to be about using a remote render farm you pay to use. I just want to connect all my old computers and use them. Will that work?

You can use Iray Server ($299 PA per machine, I believe) on a local network as far as I know, and you can also buy licenses for the stand-alone version of 3Delight which would allow networked rendering (I think they cost more, though not as much as they used to)
