Iray not updating changes

There seems to be a glitch with Daz where sometimes when you change texture maps, shader settings, render settings, (and sometimes when you change HDRIs as well), Iray doesn't update. This is happening more and more frequently. It used to be if you changed the preview setting to texture then change it back to Iray, it would update. But now that often doesn't even update the scene. As someone trying to create textures and having to constantly test different texture maps and shader settings, this glitch is extremely irritating. And, as I've said, it's gotten worse in that sometimes even changing the preview to "texture" then back to "Iray", it won't update Iray to reflect the changes.

Has anyone found a fix for this? It's making it EXTREMELY difficult to create textures and shader settings when Iray refuses to update to reflect changes made.

Huh. I wonder if this is linked to my experience where I start a render or do a big refresh and the viewport displays a setup from hours previous. It always seems to eventually sort itself out but it's really weird and definitely annoying waiting for it to reset.

I've noticed this recently as well. Very frustrating, especially since they seem to be wanting to move the textures to only being seen on rendering.  Well, if it doesn't update, I can't see what I'm doing at all!

It has always happened to me for the past several versions of DS. I mostly notice it when changing textures like when adding a tattoo and needing to see placement and using the refresh texture option

Yeah, it's been going on for a while now but, to me, it seems to have gotten worse with the latest Daz version.

Any PAs or texture creators out there know of a fix for this or a workaround? Making a dozen or so minor changes to try and get skin textures to look good when creating a character is immensely more difficult when Iray won't update to show the changes you've made.

I've tried renaming the textures every time I update them. I've tried switching view modes then back to Iray. And the only thing that works to get it to update for sure (for me) is to save the scene, then reload the scene ..every ..time. But having to save and reload the scene every single time I make an adjustment just to see what the changes look like is really infuriating and time-consuming.

How do you PAs and/or character creators do it? Is there a trick to get Iray to update properly with changes?

yep have to stop viewport rendering, use the Purge Memory Script, refresh Images CTRL+ I or Check Automatically Refresh Images to ON (Surface Pane Options menu) and then restart viewport rendering to show the changes. Same thing for Transluceny and SSS settings.

I have seen other threads about this issue. A royal PITA though and one that needs fixing.

Then maybe Daz shouldn't have gone the route of making the make ups etc. only visible in the iray render preview window.  One would think they would have fixed the refresh issue before moving to that kind of model.  That makes me even less inclined to purchase the newer figures that use the diffuse channel for make up.  No way am I saving and reloading for every make up change.  Just not going to do it.

Just remove from Diffuse Overlay and apply to Diffuse with LIE.

Actually you don't need to stop viewport rendering. You just hit again on iray icon and then refresh the new images automatically...so it starts to render from the start!

Even some hair, clothing and other things that are opaque to transluncent are not visible in openGL texture preview mode now with DAZ Studio 4.10.x

  • When making lots of minor tweaks in interactive mode I like to change the Max Samples to a very low number like 25, 50, or 100.  This will make it so that Iray preview finishes very fast and will respond to the changes you make much quicker.

I reported a bug with textures not refreshing and it seems to me that it's been fixed in the latest version (4.10 public release). However, some other PAs I've talked to say it isn't fixed for them, so I'm not really sure what the situation is. All I can say is that in the 4.9 series, I gave up trying to refresh textures and started renumbering them, but now refreshing works for me.

It's a particular problem for PAs since we spend a lot of time tweaking textures and testing them. But certainly the Dev Team are aware of the issue.

My workaround is to save the scene and then just reload the scene to see the changes. Not a very elegant workaround but it works well when it does act up with not reflecting the changes.

  • The recommendation by Dimension-Z worked for me.

The "refresh images" and "automatically refresh images" options work at times, but reclicking the iRay viewport icon triggers the image reload evertime.  It would be nice if it only reloaded images with a newer modified date.

Oh!  This might be my issue.  I just shut down DS and restarted because a set of lights I'd previously used, and then deleted from the scene, kept lighting my scene!  While DS was in the process of restarting, I was browsing the forum and saw this thread.  I realized that just a little while ago, I had increased max samples to a very large number - so perhaps this was my issue.  I also was having a problem with changing expressions.  Instead of a new expression when I clicked on a new icon, i was getting a weird mix of the expressions.  Like the old one was sort of still there.  So I had to reset between each expression I was trying.  I thought perhaps it was the particular figure, but maybe not.

  • I have been getting nice interactive results (and my cpu fan does not sound like an airplane propeller) by turning of "render quality enable" and then using "max time" set to 7 seconds.  I leave min and max samples high and just use time to limit quality.  I also set my update interval to 1 or 2 seconds for quick "photoreal renders" mode renders.
