Can the buildings in Yvoire be separated?

I export all my content to Vue, so I get OBJs and texture maps. In Stonemason's scenes such as Streets of Venice, with a little work, I can move individual buildings so I can customize the camera angles. I have tried to export Yvoire in different ways and cannot do this. Does anyone know how I can collect the OBJs and textures building by building?

  • I did this with the medieval fantasy village set, which is also just a single prop.

I exported it to blender, right click the object to select it, press tab to go into Edit mode. If everything is selected (bright yellow) press A to deselect it all.

select a few faces on every surface that you would like to export (right click to select, hold middle mouse button to spin the prop around ), press ctrl+L to select all linked faces. (so if you selected a single face on the roof, ctrl + L will select the entire roof) press p to seporate all selected face into a new object. Go back into object mode (tab) select the new prop (right click to select). File export as obj ( on the left side of the screen make sure selection only is ticked)

That's it. You now have a new obj prop of a single building.

  • I am disappointed. I should have read these posts. I guess I just assumed. But I am keeping it because it is beautiful. I just can't do quite as much with it as I hoped. Bradrg, I don't have Blender, but after reading Faveril's comment, about how he constructed it, I am not sure I could do it anyway. I do have Hexagon, but I'm not particularly good at using these programs. You have given me ideas. Thanks for all the answers. I guess Blender is still free and I could download it and try out your directions on separating props. This would be helpful.

You can use the Geometry editor in Daz Studio to achieve a similar thing to what is described above using blender. Basically after selecting the polys you want, invert the selection and remove the the selected (ie unwanted) polys. Final save what is left as a new prop asset.

Thank you for your offer of help. I downloaded Blender and plan to see if I can understand it. Can I PM you or e-mail you if I need help?

FYI there are tons of pretty good tutorials, vid and pdf, all around the Net for Blender. I'm starting in on it too.

Sucks to be Faveral and have users talk about ripping his product into pieces, oh well. Maybe ask for a new product in the same style that can be used as props.

  • I just want to clarify to FSMCDesigns. I do not rip apart products to use the pieces. But often I want to move something a tiny bit for balance for my camera angle since I do not use presets.

I just want to clarify to anyone who gives a damn. I do rip apart products to use the pieces. Then I beat them with blunt instruments, slice'n'dice and whip them into however I wan' 'em.

If ya don't what ya lovingly crafted 3D assets mistreated and abused, don't let me get my mitts on 'em.

Edit: Bloody English, can never get it wright.

Sorry, I guess i could have worded it differently. My point is that as a modeler for game communities myself, there is usually an artistic vision/plan/etc into creating something like this set with the intent that users would share the vision and use the set as is. Otherwise you would just model the individual parts and be done with it. I know if it would have been my set I would have been a bit discouraged to hear of users taking it into a modeling app to seperate parts of it and would definitely make me think twice before developing a similar scene in the future. I know most of us do alter things, it's just hard for developers to hear about it .

Sure, no problem. PM me and if I need to use images then we can move onto email. I'm going away this weekend though, so I may not respond until Sunday.

Just some quick tips, when you select file > export in Daz studio, a dialogue box will open. The first item says Convert from Daz studio > to..... select Blender in that drop down menu. You will then notice under "axis conversion" it switches the y and z axis. (y is assigned to z and z is assigned to y) Just change this back so that y remains y and z remains z, otherwise your model will appear on its side in blender.

    - in blender, you have to right click to select anything. Middle mouse button allows you to rotate around your object. Shift+middle mouse allows you to slide your view up and down, left and right. Ctrl + middle mouse will zoom in and out.

Once you select an object, tab will take you into and out of edit mode. object mode allows you to manipulate the entire object, edit mode allows you to select individual vertices, edges, or objects.

The numpad keys switch view. 1=front view, 3 = side view, 7 = top view, 5 = perspective or orthogonal. Alt +1 or 3 or 7 is back view, other side view and bottom view respectively. 0 is camera view, . (period) when an object is selected will tell the viewport to rotate around that object when using middle mouse button.

in object mode (tab moves you between edit and object mode) a to deselect, then select everything. press delete key to get rid of the default block, lights and camera. then file > import to bring your .obj into blender.

select the object, press tab to get into edit mode. Now at the bottom of the screen is a menu: view, select, add, mesh. These are editing options. The next button is another way to move between edit and object mode. The next button selects your display type ie solid, wireframe, textured etc just like in daz studio.

Press ctrl + tab to choose whether you want to select vertices, lines or faces. You will also select these same icon in the menu at the bottom of the screen.

Just for interest sake, to move an object/vertice, select it and press G (grab), to scale, s and rotate r.

  • yes but it's Faveral's artistic vision

    for mine I kitbash too

I have cut up bis of Opus Magnum, his Medieval Tavern props and others to create new scenes and now bought his MICK which does the same

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen a PA getting excited about the idea of seeing what users create with his or her product, and I think I'd feel the same way. There wouldn't be much point in selling products to people with the expectation that they would just do with it what you've done - you may as well just try and sell the promo images somewhere instead. I think most PAs would just be grateful for the people who want a little more from a product but didn't expect them to cater to every single thing that might possibly be done with it and are savvy enough to buy it and make it work in the way that they want. There are going to be plenty of other buyers using the product 'as is', anyway.

I don't feel bad at all about people kitbashing my sets... And whenever possible I do separate big sets into clusters of buildings that can be used separately or hidden or moved. It just wasn't an option with this set because of the uneven terrain.

  • I only kitbash sets that I feel look good. And IF I can make a nice scene with the pieces, I do so. Admittedly that's a big IF. I don't fault Faveral at all for making his products the way he does. I feel lucky just to have access to them at all.

What I don't feel lucky about is the fact a lot of great sets have all dropped at the same time. My bank account has been kitbashed, and I'm sure my wife will rip me apart and try to put me back together in the form of a better husband. Good luck with that.

  • Bradrg - I tried a little with Blender after your first post. I plan to try more. I did wonder why the object was on its side. Thanks for clarifying it. I don't have too many hours on the computer anymore do to my health so the going might be slow. Again thanks and I'm sure I will be in touch after I try manipulating using all your information.
