How much does hidden or invisible geometry affect performance in DS?

Pretty straight forward question. I wonder if I hide parts of armor/clothing with the geometry editor on how much it will affect perfornance. I want to buy a certain armor for the centaur, but only use the top for my non centaur soldier and then have quite a few instances, but I am worried about the performance impact if they all have hidden or invisible geometry on them.

  • Invisible bones (as opposed to surfaces made invisible by their material properties) are not passed to the renderer. I'm not sure there's much effect for viewport performance.

thanks Richard. What about surfaces made invisible by their material properties?

I'm curious, too. And does it make any difference between setting cutout opacity to 0 VS toggling the parameter's display to off?

  • A see-through surface still gets passed to the renderer and processed when a light path goes through it, the engine has to check its effect even if it is intended to come out as zero.
