Glad I found this thread.  I had some simular questions about lighting.  I still a little confused but I learned some things I didn't know before,  The last image you posted looks awesome, although I'm still a bit confused how you got there.  Big Godzilla fan.

It really isn't hard, especially if you have the Godrays props. https://www.daz3d.com/epic-props-godrays-volumetric-light-for-iray

The godrays props didn't wanna work for me, even when I followed the instructions to the letter. So, after messing with it, and my GF paying around with the Godrays(she isn't really into Daz, but she loves to help me with stuff), she took a plane, and applied the textures from a Godray prop to the plane, and positioned it next to the spotlight for the Godray(the Godrays are props parented to a spotlight, so she hid the prop part). It wasn't really working, but it showed much more promise. So I used a Real Lighting shader on the plane (monitor screen), and reapplied the Godray textures. Then we tweaked the brightness of the plane and spotlight(which still needs more tweaking frankly), and there it is! Searchlight. The downside being its a flat plane, so the light actually hitting anything is totally depending on the spotlight, so it's gonna be a bit of work to figure that part out.

I don't have any of the godrays products or the atmosphere cam (in my wish list).  I do have Terra Dome 3 that has atmospheric effects.  I'm wondering if I can get that light effect with a spotlight and those effects?  I'll have to try it.  Would I need to do anything special to the spotlight?

    Here's a tutorial I found usful for that: https://www.versluis.com/2017/04/how-to-use-spotlights-with-nvidia-iray-in-daz-studio/

    Thank you.

No prob! Do be aware, though, that you WILL mess around alot with light positioning for the best effect... At first I didn't think it worked, but I realized that when looking at the shot from my camera angle the spotlight looked like it was hitting Godzilla right in the face, but when I went to an overhead view it wasn't even close to being lined up right.

  • In case it helps, you should be able to look through spotlights (and distant lights) from the camera drop down to make sure you are hitting your target.

Yeah, I stumbled across that trick by accident when I was trying to figure out why I'd gotten the light so far off from the side where it was in relation to Godzilla but looked like it was facing him perfectly when I looked through the camera. Thanks!
