Is there a need to buy another Dolly Hair?

I bought the G3F version end of April, now G8 is out, and of course, out trots another model specific hair with an expansion that works for both.  Why do I need to buy another version of the same hair when the one I already have should fit G8?  Is it necessary to have both? It appears from the product page that they both have the same options, so why would I?

I put the expansion in my cart  since I already have the G3F version, and it said the the G8 version is a 'Required Product'.  I guess the cart system doesn't know I already own a version that will work with these so it warns me?

Anyway, just looking for anyone who thinks it's a good idea to buy another base hair when I already have one.  Thx. indecision

I don't have the expansion or the G8F version, but I'm assuming the add ons will work for either one, and the G8F is just a refit. I could be wrong, but that was the impression I got too. I would think the G3F version would autofit just fine to G8F. I can try it after I finish this render.

  • There are custom bones which would be lost in AutoFitting.

The product page for the expansion expressly states that it works with both G3F and G8F versions. Either one is listed as a required item.

If you want to use the G3F version on G8F, you'll need to re-rig it, not autofit it, to keep from breaking its function.

There are ways around breaking the function using the G3F version on G8F, if you are comfortable following tutorials that have you using functions within DS that you've never used before, (for some of us, anyway..) However, if you plan on using the newest generation of models and aren't comfortable tinkering with the unkonwn, or if you don't already have the G3F version, it makes sense to buy a version specific for G8F.

So this version will fill a need for some Daz Studio users, and not for others. I think it's a smart move on the vendor's part, to "future-proof" the product when coming out with expansions for it, increasing the target market.

Yeah, most autofitted hair is extremely disappointing with the loss of the bones. AprilYSH's come to mind, which almost always lose the ability to pose (and I have a lot of her hairs and most are my very favorite hairs) *sigh*.

Well, I know absolutely nothing about how to do anything with bones or rigging.  Shame that it has to be that way since I thought G8 is the most backward compatible figure in the market.  So does G8 have custom bones or does the hair have custom bones?

L'Adair, do you have links to these tutorials for funtions that are made to be understood by a third grader? cheeky  Cuz that's how little I know about this subject.  I can always give the tut a try and if it's an epic fail, then I guess I cough up another hair ball.

    Thx.

You could just try parenting the hair using the scale dials to get it to fit as best you can then use the smoothing modifyer if neccassary

Ah, Scorpio beat me to it. Placing and parenting works great with hairs.

Ok, will try that, but do you still have any idea where I can find the tutorials you mentioned?  Thx

The transfer utility should conserve custom bones after fitting if you follow Sickleyield's tutorial, the only problem I have seen with this method is when going from a figure like G3 to one with less bones like G2, but that shouldn't cause any issues with G8.

Hey, thank you so much!  Her tutorials are pretty easy to follow too, so even if I don't completely understand something, I can follow the process.

To answer your question, it's the hair that has the extra custom bones, for example if you have a pony tail, and that is rigged, or long hair that has rigging to adjust movement. When you use autofit, these extra movent bones are ditched, and the hair becomes static and sometimes distorted..

No problem, that's my good deed for the day (I need to go out more...).

This is the one I use, for both wardrobe and hair, Convert Clothing G3 to G8, G8 to G3. High heeled shoes may or may not work, depending on how the vendor saved things. It doesn't work well with hair parented to a separate scalp. Or rigidity items parented to clothing, (like buttons.) But to be able to use most of your G3 products on G8 with a bit of work leaves more money for buying things you don't already have.

Oh, well yuck.  Don't want that.  I'll try the tutorial first and if I'm an epic fail, I'll prolly buy the hair and the expansion since buying 2 gives me a better discount.

Oooh, another tut!!  I'll give that one a go too.  Yeah, shoes have been an issue it seems from generation to generation.  I'd have thought there'd be improvements.  What?  You mean there's still things I don't have??? surprise I need to work on that asap!!  Thx for the info.

I was thinking of things yet to be released; clothing, sets, new characters, etc. Things you don't know you can't live without until they are released... lol
