It's like "Musical Chairs"... only with PAs and Products

What in that the heck is going on with this business lately?  There's always been a little bit of content drift between the major stores, but lately it seems as though a PA, or at least a huge portion of their products, will be in a store one day and then the next they're not.  I was all hyped after the big fanfare about the HIveWire creatures coming to DAZ and bought the BigCats to show support.  What I was really wanting, though, was their housecat and kitten but I never saw them show up.  Instead, I just found out that all the Hivewire cats moved over to Renderosity instead.  Meanwhile Renderosity keeps running "NEW PRODUCT" ads for items that have been on sale previously at DAZ, RDNA and in some case even Rendo itself.  Then we had the brief appearance of a huge stack of Vanishng Point products here, but the VP DAZ store is gone, while one of my favorite Rendo PA teams, Anain & AkashaBloodRiver, literally put a new product in their store on August 27th and on September first it, their store and their contact information was completely gone.  Meanwhile, on the flip side, I thought Ironman13 was just recycling products she'd sold at Rendo here, but with new Iray mats and G3F poses, but it seems that most of the DAZ versions are almost completely different but with the same name. It's really starting to break my brain, as I keep looking at things and then thinking... Wait!  I already have that!  Or do I?  And where is it...?

Your guess is as good as mine! I can't keep up either and I frequent most of the major 3D stores. Trying to remember where I have what is getting confusing.

  • It isn't that odd. Artists come and go and the venue that people choose to sell at depends on the market and what the selling restrictions are and their relationship with the store.

Sometimes pas come here expect to make a killing and somehow they don't make the sales. Some new vendors vastly overestimate the need for their product and what people will be willing to pay for it. Others get caught up in store politics at various businesses and choose to go elsewhere.

  • I also think some stuff gets rejected in one place and sold at another.

I wouldn't like to see the word "exclusive" bandied about.

And although I dislike a lot things about the other store (mostly the interface and content) their prices make an alternative place to go.

I think it's good for business - both ways....when you have a monopoly things always get worse.

    ----------

But yes, I agree, I was VERY confused seeing oh-too-familiar products....

Some I do want on here...but maybe it's like everything else and you should eat out every so often.

    --

There's some weird iStock photo type products on there too....

Like the really old-school cyborg stuff.

Like the futuristic imagery they used to advertise compact discs with...lol

  • One concern is that we will purchse the same product multiple times from different stores. To avoid this, I have scaled back my purcahses. I now only purchase when I need it for a specfic project that I am working on today.

  • I've noticed the trend, too. There are probably lots of reasons why vendors jump ship, none of which are any of my business. I'm not a PA so I don't have any specific insights worth sharing. But there's got to be a common thread among most of the recent vacancies.

i like the exclusive flag smiley
doesnt really make sense to multi market, dont most stores have a minimum threshold before they'll send a check?

like the stores that keep purchase history, notifications of previously purchased and offer d/l of prev stuff.

also like the link to file list and readme from product page. is a pain to look up doku the long way

I think she means she buys "Elf Outfit 100" at the Daz store and the same vendor sells it at another store with a new name ...like "Elven adventures" and makes new promo art -

And you don't recognize it and literally buy the same product twice.

I know I've tried to buy the same item twice at the Daz store and then I see the little cloud in the bottom corner and do the happy dance.

BUT! There's also several items that have a V4 version, a genesis version AND a genesis 2 version. lol

So yeah, I have grabbed the same item a few times over.

I was just struggling this weekend with

    https://www.daz3d.com/artemisx-for-genesis

    Which is also this...

    https://www.daz3d.com/artemisx for V3.

I have lots of V3 clothes that will not work...probably need to grab- yet another conversion add-on for that really old stuff...

I'm talking about established product, though, not new items.  I know that DAZ can get quite finicky, but I think this is now the third or fouth time for some of the same vendors to have moved the same items back and fourth.

In my experience, most of the official conversions for from Gen3 and Gen4 to Genesis 1 and up seem to be new meshes in the same style, though the UV maps are sometimes identical as with the MFD and Mech Girl.  Gen3 to Gen 4 conversions, on the other hand, and any conversion from one Geneis 1/2/3/8 figure to another seem to be much more likely to be simply refits.

Just a correction - they are not moved over to Renderosity.  They're still at HiveWire, but are ALSO being sold at Renderosity.

I get what you're saying, and you're right that they never left HIveWire, but what I meant was that the BigCats were (briefly) here at DAZ and then that deal moved to Rendo.

DAZ's info page says their terms are 50% of net, which could really be a pittance, what with all the sales and shopping-cart jenga. As a customer, I love the DAZ content store and loathe Rendo, but if you're a PA at DAZ, it seems to me you really gotta go for volume. If you have more of a niche product, the other stores may offer better terms.

  • Yeah, I could see where that would be obnoxious. I myself haven't really paid much attention to other PAs outside of my favorites, so I have no idea what's what and where's where nowadays.

I do feel that each store does offer its own variety of product and its own "culture", so to speak. Which in the long run, can be a good thing: it helps spur on the creation of items that would otherwise go unmade or unwanted elsehwere (i.e. a vendor on Rendo has been making some very lovely same-sex romance poses). I do agree that it's hard keeping up with who's exclusive to where, and what items have vanished or been moved to other pastures. Especially since not every item came over when RDNA merged, and some items on that site completely vanished into the ether entirely.

That said, I think a large part of it could be chalked up to the vendor's expectations of how much they'll be making/selling versus what the "culture"/demographics of the store is willing to buy. The markets for each site are extremely different: one is all-ages/family friendly, one focuses largely on sexy Barbie dolls, and one seems to be extremely ADD in what it wants to specialize in (save for the sexy ladies). That's not getting into the, uh, black sheep of the online 3D asset stores, lmao.

Hmm... let's see if I read you right that's Hivewire, DAZ, and the two Rend stores... but there are two more "mini-majors" ... first, that Black Sheep has actually spun off a fairly respectable mainstream site with a cleaned up version of their store as of late, CGBytes, and then there's the "We kinda used to be the Poser figure specialists but we couldn't figure out how to make that a viable business so please pay for the privilege of us not deleting your archived products, oh, wait, where are you going?" store.

Wait, there are two Rendo stores? What?

PS - Don't forget Adam Thwaites great site. :)

The "kinda used to be" store would be Content Paradise ;)

Still hate that name, even after all these years. I liked Ironbear's name for it better - Content Parasites. LOL

    Laurie

Oh yeah! I've heard that mention a couple of times. I think I might have a freebie or two from there.

Then we had the brief appearance of a huge stack of Vanishng Point products here, but the VP DAZ store is gone...

I don't know if it's the same stuff that appeared here, but a lot of VanishingPoint's stuff has showed up on ShareCG now... For sale... At ShareCG...

Yeah... ShareCG sells stuff too now...

The whole freakin' world has gone nutso...

Much of their stuff has been doing the rounds of the sites anyway over the years - I always check my runtimes before thinking about buying any of it.

As far as the Hivewire stuff, the animals were supposed to be sold exclusively on Daz with a deal made between Daz and Hivewire. But then Hivewire posted some stuff that didn't sit right with Daz and the deal was negated. Now it looks like Hivewire has made a deal with rendo to sell their animals there.

I do agree that sometimes it does get confusing trying to keep track of what you already have and what you're buying as I probably have triplicates of some items.

I wish PAs would give a heads-up where they're going or what stuff is moving so we know why our wishlist just dropped a dozen or so items and what they were.

Or perhaps a notice on item descriptions, stating where something has been sold before and under what name.

I think often PAs risk problems if they give info, or are even outright told not to

Some things clearly take a lot of time to produce and other things clearly do not.  There is a fair amount of recycling going on with items sold here and elsewhere...Especially with the same resource being used and very little difference in the model. Some pa's make their bread and butter from selling the same thing with slightly altered textures or shape.

I think moving content too much can alienate your client base and make the seller look problematical or flighty. People don't want to buy from vendors if they think they will be gone the next day.
