Sparkle Shaders for Iray : how does it work ?

Hello, I bought and tried to use http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/45959/start

I tried to apply the basis, after having some clothes selected, and then I clicked on a shader : nothing happened at all. What should I do ?

  • If they are shader presets, you will need to also select the surface or surfaces you want to apply them to in the Surfaces tab.
  • Ok, done and it works, thanks. What is the technical explanation / usual use for that tab ?

Adjusting the shader/material settings for a given surface.

So if you don't like how shiny something is, or want to use a different texture map in the diffuse setting but that texture map doesn't have a preset (because it's from a pack of just tiling textures, for example) or want to set up your own material settings for something, you use the surfaces tab to do it.

It's a tab I heartily reccomend getting to know.  It makes things like Kitbashing outfits and customizing the appearance of things (such as making adjustments after swtiching from 3DL to Iray) much easier.

On a preset where you just select the object and apply:
The names of the material zones are included in the preset, so that it can set multiple zones at the same time.  (or just for convenience if it only has one zone)

On a preset that is just a material for universal use:
There are no material zones associated with it to keep the material as universal as possible.  With this preset you can set it to any surface on any object in the scene.

One of those bits of terminology to know is "shader" such as frosted glass; you select the surface and apply the shader, and "material" such as frosted glass for Michael's beer stein where you select the stein and apply the material so that material equals shader for a specific piece of geometry.
