Hello Everyone,

I'm planning to get a new laptop with better graphic card for rendering and gaming. I'm not in US and prices are quite expensive here. These are the few options i have available here. So please don't suggest some other brand/model. I will mention prices in USD but price should not be much reason for choosing.

I need suggestion about CPU/GPU performance as which one would be better for 3D rendering and gaming. Also which one would be the best in long term for speed, performance, build quality and cooling.

Lenovo Legion Y720 - 7th Gen Core i7-7700HQ QuadCore 16GB 1TB+128GB SSD 6GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 15.6" FHD 1080p Win 10 Backlit Keyboard JBL Premium Audio  |  Price: $1639

Lenovo Ideapad Y900 Extreme Gaming Laptop - 6th Gen Core i7-6820HK QuadCore 8MB Cache - 16GB 1TB+128GB SSD 8GB Nvidia Geforce GTX 980m 17.3"Full HD IPS LED JBL Sound  |  Price: $1589

Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571 - 7th Gen Core i7-7700HQ Quadcore 16GB DDR 4 256GB SSD, 6GB-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 15.6" Full HD LED Windows 10 Red-Backlit Keyboard  |  Price: $1679

Acer Predator G9 591 - 6th Gen Core i7-6700HQ Quadcore 32GB 1TB HDD + 512 GB SSD 15.6"Full HD 1080p 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX980M BluRay Rom Win 10 Predator TrueHarmony Sound |  Price: $1769

Thanks

  • I'd get the one with the 8GB GTX 980 personally. More CUDA cores and more memory for rendering larger scenes. I like Iray though.

These are all going to be decent for gaming.

  • I only use days. I'm quite happy with mine. The lenovos I have bought in the past I've been disappointed with.

    Thank you for suggestions..

I talk with seller and i can get both lenovo at exact same final price. $1579

Now i'm stuck which one should i get.. Ideapad 900 have 17.3" screen which is bugging me quite a lot... Otherwise its almost same configuration except for card difference and CPU difference.

    8GB GTX 980m and 6th Gen Core i7-6820HK for  Ideapad Y900 (17.3" FHD)

    6GB GTX 1060 and 7th Gen Core i7-7700HQ for Legion Y720 (15.6" FHD)

I would appericiate more input on these 2 laptops.. Which is the better deal for same price.

    Thanks

  • I like this one because to me it has a nicer GPU with more memory and more CUDA cores for GPU rendering. 8GB GTX 980m and 6th Gen Core i7-6820HK for  Ideapad Y900 (17.3" FHD)

But if you like CPU rendering I think the other is better for that. Both of them are good, there is just a little tradeoff between GPU and CPU.

It looks like otherwise they have the same RAM and hard drive space. The Legion looks like it might be slightly less bulky if that matters.

Honestly I would go for the Y720.

The GTX 1060 may only have 6GB of VRAM, but it's render speeds will keep up with the desktop version of the GTX 980.
The GTX 980M is almost as fast as the the desktop GTX 970, whereas there is a reason why the notebook GTX 10xx cards do not have a "M" at the end of the name (They are the same chips that are in the desktop ones)

On a side note, the Y720 is only 7lbs (3.2kg) and the Y900 is 10lbs (4.4kg).  If you need the computer to be portable that 10lbs will suck...

Also, the i7 7700HQ in the Y720 should perform a little faster (including the integrated GPU) for your general computer usage.
Modern Nvidia notebook computers keep the Geforce card turned off untill an app that neds it turns it on, so the performance of the Intel integrated GPU is important for day to day usage.

  • Oh damn I didn't notice that was a 980M. Yeah I would go for the Y720 also.

Thanks @agent unawares. Yes, There is little bit difference and Y720 is less bulky. And Thank you @JamesJAB for detailed reply.. You have convinced me to go for Y720. :)

I came back to post that i got message from seller and i can get 2 other models for this same price $1579..

    Acer Predator Helios 300 G3-571 - 7th Gen Core i7-7700HQ Quadcore 16GB DDR 4 256GB SSD 6-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 15.6" Full HD LED Windows 10 Red-Backlit Keyboard

    MSI GS73VR 6RF STEALTH PRO - 6th Gen Core i7-6700HQ QuadCore 16GB 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD 6 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GDDR5 17.3" FHD 1080p Display 360° Virtual Surround Sound by Nahimic - Backlit KB - VR Ready (Slim)

Again there is a little tradeoff In comparison with Y720,

MSI have 17.3" screen (5.3 pounds) , 6th Gen CPU but 128GB extra SSD..

While Acer Helios 300 also have 128GB extra SSD but doesn't have 1TB HDD.

Should i still go with Y720? I need to decide fast as this deal is for very short time. Its always confusion when there are more choices. :)

    Thanks again for the help.

    Nah, stick with the Y720

The cooling setup is better, it gets heat out of the computer more efficiently.  This is very important while rendering.

(just skimed over a few reviews, The Acer gets over 50c on the keyboard under full load.  That is not good)
The MSI is last generation's i7 CPU

Just Remeber that your Windows drive is only 128GB, so you will want to keep your Daz Studio library on the 1TB drive.

@JamesJAB You're right. I already had this experience on my current laptop. I have 256GB SSD, which have 2 paritions. 118GB space for C:\ with Daz Library. It was over in no time. So i extended C drive with D.. That's why i wanted to get Y720 with 256GB SSD at-least but seller didn't agree and said its not possible. I searched around and there was issues with several users when they tried to upgrade SSD in Y720, According to some users, lenovo created a whitelist in bios and mentioned a list of competible SSD's. Here are details..That's probably why he didn't want to experiment and said upgrade is not possible.

I wonder if this laptop would support another 2.5" SSD via caddy or some other way. In my current laptop, (Dell 7520 R15 Special Edition) i replaced DVD player with 2.5" SSD. If there is a way to put 2.5" SSD in Y720.. I can try to add and that would make things great. :)

@Mistara Wow. that looks amazing. :) But too LATE, i already spent a lot of money. My pockets are empty.. If only i knew this before. :)

This computer does not have an internal optical drive, so there is nothing to replace to add an extra internal drive.

Here's an quote out of the service manual showing the "supported" m.2 drives that are larger than the one that your has installed.  I have made the model numbers bold font for easy indentification.  Keep in mind that there probably is not a "whitelist" for m.2 ssd drives on this computer.  Most issues have to do with there being two standards for m.2 slots - see more on this under the "supprted list"  If you decide the upgrade to a larger SSD, I recommmend sticking with the NVMe type as they are very fast compared to traditional SSD drives.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    10 SSD, PM961 MZVLW256HEHP PCIE 256G SSD 5SD0L73444 N
    10 SSD, 256 Toshiba XG4 256G M.2 2280 PCIe-NVMe THNSN5256GPUK 5SD0M56299 N
    10 SSD, HFS256GD9MND-5510A M.2 256G SSD 5SD0L56326 N
    10 SSD, PM961 MZVLW512HMJP PCIE 512G SSD 5SD0L73443 N
    10 SSD, 512 Toshiba XG4 512G M.2 2280 PCIe-NVMe THNSN5512GPUK 5SD0M56300 N
    10 SSD, HFS512GD9MND-5510A M.2 512G SSD 5SD0L56325 N
    10 SSD, Samsung MZVLW1T0HMLH-000L2 PCIe M.2 1TB SSD 5SD0L07883 N
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your board will most likely take any m.2 2280 PCIe SSD (the important part is that it uses the PCIe interface)
These can be visulay identified based on the diagram (All of the "M Key" cards use the PCIe interface)
If the product is listed as SATA, has the "B Key", or the "B & M Key" it will not work in your computer

  • If you still want an extra drive after upgrading you can also get an SSD, put it in an enclosure and use it connected to USB as a kind of super-SD-card. I take one of these with my Surface on vacation so I can store photos. As long as it's used for content instead of installing programs I can imagine it would work fine.

My DS library is 170 GB and I've just uninstalled a bunch of it so I know what you mean about running out of space.
