Inclusions and flaws in Iray

This may have been discussed somewhere in all the various threads about Iray, but is there an easy way to replicate inclusions and flaws in gemstones in Iray?  or would they have to be modeled in?  Like if I want to recreate Opal, or a star sapphire, for example.  Or something like Tiger Eye.  I've seen marbles, but that seems to work similar to 3DL marble, where the marbling is just part of the diffuse map.  I'm looking for something more ... customizable.

Opal you "might" be able to pull off using metallic flakes, emission and SSS. I've been working on it but haven't gotten anything that I'd be proud of ;). Tiger eye is another matter...chatoyancey in substances like wood, tiger eye, laboradite, etc, is VERY hard to replicate in a shader since the inclusions go down thru the material rather than just sit on a layer (like the fire in an opal triplet). To date I haven't figured out how to accomplish it, tho I'm sure someday someone will...I'm just not sure the shader setup has the capacity to pull it off yet ;).

You might start with tiger eye by adding an alpha map of the shimmery stripes to the refraction (because it's a volume) and see how it goes. You can adjust then how contrasty you want the alpha map and just experiment.

Thanks.  I have a personal quest (of sorts) to figure out ways to make various "fantasy" gemstones, and the inclusion/flaw issue has been styming some of my ideas, since I'm trying to set them up as a single shader preset so that I can potentially give them away as freebies.

Apparently marbles are collectors items now. I found a stash working in my yard that must of been from the 70s and put them on my window ledge outside but the disappeared while the expensive golf balls I found remained there.
