Products for Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 in DAZ Studio 4.8.0.59

I still use Daz Studio 4.8.0.59  64 bit because I like it. I know I cannot use Genesis Female 8 in it. But some products say for Genesis F3 and Genesis F8. Since I do use Genesis F3, will a product for both work with GF3 in Daz Studio 4.8? I am not worried about the version of Iray because I export all as OBJs. Thank you

  • Yes.

Technically there are no products for G3 and G8 owing to how Studio does its "for" thing. So a product for G3 and G8 is actually a bundle of two very similar items, one adpated to g3 and one adpated to g8. Simply install only the G3 package and all will be well.

(Actually, if you install both all, will be well, as well, though you'll be wasting disk space. G8 kinda works in 4.8, but results can be a bit odd, and some features throw errors (not fatal)). So it shouldn't matter if you have it installed, though it won't do much good in the long run. I think G8 would work well enough for you to use some of the tips and tricks that allow you to autofit G8 stuff to G3.

That said (and no pressure here, because I'm slow to upgrade, too) 4.9 is not notably different from 4.8, especially if you don't iRay. (I don't.) There may be value worth considering in upgrading, if only to have more stable platform for converting G8 items to G3. There also may not. I don't know your reasons, obviously, and you may depend on features I don't. Just putting that out there.

  • Thank you, Singular Blues. I stick with 4.8 because all my stuff is in categories that I created and it works well. Thanks for the tip about autofit for G8 to G3. Can I purchase items for G8 to autofit to G3 such as hair without having any G8 characters installed at all? I have not been paying attention to G8 products. How would I get an autofit product to auto fit hair and clothes from G8 to other versions?

  • You would have to install G8 to use the instrctions to make a clone. That's one of the links in my sig.

I know G8 will load in 4.8 because I test drove it before I upgraded to 4.9 (which I did mostly to get rid of the small bugs that would crop up because 4.8 can't load some of the extended functions of G8. I don't actually use those functions, and G8 worked fine without them.). But purely to create a clone, G8 should work in 4.8.

Once you have the clone, any clothing or hair item you bought for G8 would work. There might be iRay related issues, but you said that wasn't important for your needs, so they could be ignored in that case. Of course, hair has it's own issues with autofit, so you might not get the same results with transfers, but that's down to autofit, not the hair. And, of course, shoes will actuall be a bit worse then they usually are, (and they are already bad) because G3 has a foot bone that G8 doesn't. And because shoes are hard to transfer between figures at best. But hair (especially short hair) and clothing will work well enough.

I might be wrong but I think I did load G8 in 4.8. It complains that something - whatever it might be - is not working, but I could not find a problem.
I migrated to 4.9 though, because I really needed the CSV import/export on the morph list of FBX import - otherwise I'd have lost my sanity completely.

The shaders for G8 use features not in 4.8, plus there is a difference in tinting between the two. Plus, no support for Autofit and the newer version of the Powerpose templates.

Out of curiosity, why do you export everything?

I keep 4.8 on my laptop because I like the blue bars that show me where all my new content is.  Are you aware that you can keep 4.8 and load the 4.9 BETA and run them both on the same machine?  It has to be the Beta though, as it does not overwrite the 4.8.  The 4.9 Pro will overwrite the 4.8.  And, when you install the 4.9 Beta all of your categories will carry over to the 4.9 and if you add something to the 4.8 it automatically shows up in the 4.9.  That way, you can have the best of both worlds.

  • FSMCDesigns - I export because I have been using Vue Infinite since before 2002. I love the lighting I can get for my figures (I know some don't agree and say the lighting is too harsh, but I am a fan of subtle lighting and can still get what I want). It could be simply familiarity, but I started using DAZ again heavily a few years ago and I am comfortable with Vue. Also, I can control props and scenes better once exported as an OBJ. How it exports depends on the export choices. I can combine props, modify props (not geometry but materials, etc. I could continue on.

IceDragonArt. A few months ago I got a new computer. My seoncary one is still fast with 64 gig of memory. I think I will do as you suggested. Thanks for the idea. I hadn't really thought of it.

Thanks for all the other answers also. I think now I can determine how I procede.

Thanks for the reply. Tried Vue a few times in the past and liked it, might have to give it another go.
