Question about GPU change

Hey everyone,

Just a quick question to get a bit of advice from the community...

My GTX 980 Ti has given up and has had to be returned to the store under warranty.  It is only 13 months old so I'm a little bit put out after pulling out so much money for it.  But it's being sent back to ASUS for repair or replacement.  The store seem to think it'll end up being replaced so my question to him was "with what card?", as the 980 series is no longer available new.

He said I'd get a GTX 1070 as a replacement if it comes to that.  I've done a little research and it looks to me like the 980 Ti scores much better in a lot of areas - see [ http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-980-Ti-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1070/3439vs3609 ]

The official specs of each card also show that the 980 Ti has 2816 CUDA cores as opposed to the 1070's 1920.  That's a big old drop in CUDA cores which I know are really important in DAZ rendering.

So, in your opinion, am I getting a better card or worse?  How will the 1070 fare against the 980 Ti when it comes to rendering?  Would it be worth offering to pay the difference and try for a 1080?

Any help greatly appreciated.  This kind of stuff is not my area of expertise!

You will probably get a 980 ti back as a replacement.

If for some reason they bump you to a GTX 1070, I would not complain.  Your Iray render times will be very close to no change, but you will have an extra 2GB of Vram for your renders to use before dropping to CPU rendering. (Pascal CUDA cores are superior to Maxwell cores)
    Things to note:

    • The GTX 1070 uses quite a bit less power than the GTX 980ti (over 100W less in some full load tasks)
    • When looking at actual reviews that show what settings are used for the games, the GTX 1070 beats the GTX 980ti in most cases
    • GTX 1070 runs a little quieter and cooler than the 980ti which should mean a longer life when used in a rendering environment.

No problem.  The 10xx series cards are a large step forward in GPU processing capabilities.  Probably the largest single jump since the leap to unified shaders with the 8800GT back in the day.
