Changing drives?
At the moment I use my C drive for all my Daz stuff. However I'm running out of room, which I'm sure has happened to a lot of you guys. I'm going to buy an external hard drive, but my question is this: should I continue using my C drive and just move the zipped folders from there to the external after unzipping and installing the content to clear some space, or should I move all my Daz stuff to the external drive and use that for everything instead? If the second option is best, is there a way to tell Daz to use the external drive instead of the C drive that it automatically uses?
Thanks for any info on this.

How are you installing now - manually, via DIM, or via Connect?
Most of my stuff is from places like sharecg and so on. I assume that's manually? Unzip then drag or copy content folders to the library.
To tell Daz Studio where to look for content, go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager. Make sure to change both the "Daz Studio Formats" and the "Poser Formats" location (and the Daz Connect location if you use that as well and wnat to move it).
quite the same issue here.
I changed the location of the entire 'studio' directory to network drive, registered the path correctly in STUDIO and in DIM. I alwasy install via DIM.
Props and environments load properly, but figures don't. A messages tells me there are files missing.
Right click on object and 'Browse to file location' opens the correct directory.
???
Dragging the file manually into Studio works.
Any idea?
Many thanks and regards
Can you post these 2 screenshots:
1) In DS, Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, expand the "DAZ Studio Formats" and "Poser Formats"
2) In DIM, on Ready to Install tab check the "Show Details" box in the lower right
Thanks! I hope it's as simple as it sounds! But, what's Daz Connect and what does it do? Not sure if I use it or not.
I've just been having a look in DS, after getting to the Content Directory Manager part, it shows me Content Sets. What would I do next? I'm a bit hopeless when it comes to messing with files.
Here is the run following 1 to 4:
I guess i got it!
DIM remembers the original installation path of the product, regardless if you change the directory path later. In addition, 'ready to install' features a path for updating the content, and this path points to the old installation path by default.
Your hint 'Show details' was excellent.
Any recomendation how to work around? Uninstall and reinstall all products or just change the 'update path' configuration? I guess the first solution will be best.
Many thanks and regards
Oh please let me append:
The solution is only half of the truth.
in fact DIM can't deal with UNC paths, example: \\YOURSERVERNAME\YOURSHARENAME\...
Trying to tell DIM that 'My library' is on an UNC path leads to aborting any installation.
This is kind of anoying, every simple application deals with UNC paths.
The good news is that there is a workaround for that. Hope that helps other people:
In Windows go to 'Computer', from the menu select 'connect network drive'. Browse to the respective network directory or type in the path as \\YOURSERVERNAME\YOURSHARENAME\...\DAZ 3D\Studio\My library\
Make sure to asign an appropriate drive letter! example: z:
You also may only select \\YOURSERVERNAME\YOURSHARENAME\, you always can drill down to 'my library' from the drive letter.
In DIM select the created drive and drill down to your 'My library' folder.
Restart the installation process and everythings works fine.
Do not try to just add a simple network address under Computer by telling the UNC path and give it a common name. This will not work.
You must assign a drive letter.
Thanks and regards
I also am looking ot move my content to another drive. My laptop SSD is dangerously close to filling up.
Can I just move my entire "My Daz3D Library" to the other drive and change the path in Content Manager?
Or, are there other installed reference points that need to be edited?
Also, will moving the "My Daz3D Library" folder to another drive, affect the "Products" section of Content Manager...or, will this be automatically updated when the library is moved?
Well, I am not a member of the DAZ staf or forum staf, and I am not into nuts and bolts in deep as a whole.
But what I know is that is a critical point wether you install content manually or via DIM or via DAZ Connect.
If you use DIM for products which are available via Connect as well and you use Connect, then Studio always tries to update content via Connect. You can give that a prove. Products available thru Connect suggest to install the product again. Doing so will get your products a green frame in Studio. This will not harm your system. In fact there are some outdated products, that always request an update regrdless how often you do that. Ignore theese requests or dive into the postgre database to set the "needupdate" flag to false manually. This operation is only recommended for database advanced! Don't do that if you are not familliar with database operations.
If you use DIM, and I 'd assume that because you mentioned you use "My DAZ3D Library" you should do the following:
- make up a drive letter where to move the library
- in Studio Content manager change the path under "My daz 3d Library"
- In DIM in settings change the " install to" path to the same location
- in "show details" select for updating the new path as well
