3D work Hard Drive recommendations

I am a unity graphics designer and i need a suggestion that is that possible that i could install my all 3D softwares on external hard drive i have one by seagate but i don't konw what are the procedures to do before actually get that hard drive working, a friend of mine told me about formatting and partitioning so is there any kind of help i can get for this purpose.Thanks
