Have they stopped making GTX 170 cards already or is there a shortage of tthem? I have been waiting to get one until my birthday next Saturday in hopes of getting gift cards or money to help pay for them. In the meantime over the last few weeks it seems like they have gone up in price by nearly $100

..I noticed a number of the listing on Newegg indicate "Out of Stock". Not seeing the same for the 1080.
Now I did read a month or so ago that there is to be a 20xx series coming out which is pretty much a refinement of the 10xx series. Again this may just be speculation as I remember all the talk before the 980 Ti was released that it was going to have 8 GB of memory.
Maybe they are more popular because they are a better deal for 8 GB than the standard 1080 and not significantly higher in cost than the 6 GB 1060.
There is a thing called Ethereal trading or something like that where people will buy up certain items to drive up the prices and unfortunately it seems that video cards are the main target at the moment..
There's a lot of cryptocurrency miners who are buying up GPUs right now, mainly due to the Ethereum price bubble.
Thanks for the info.
Sadly, if it keeps up I won't be getting the card after all and willl have to continue 'making do"with my GTX 970. And all because of the greed of others.
I read an article this morning that was mentioning the 1060, and it's suitability for cryptocurrency mining. With the AMD cards selling at a premium right now, I'm not at all surprised that 1070 stocks are now drying up.

Not that NVidia needs any more money, but I'm sure they appreciate the increased sales. Hopefully team Green and Team Red can get ahead of the demand soon, as I'll be in the market for an Nvidia card shortly.
Charlie, I have a GTX 1080, which I bought with my new computer last October. I'm looking at getting a second card, and I see the 1080's are showing a similar, sometimes cheaper, price as the 1070's. Might be worth your time and effort to look at those...
True. But either one of them is pushing my price range and if the cost goes much over $500 I may have to wait and save up additional $200 for an 11GB GTX 1080 ti.
I would check out craigslist. I purchased a really nice founders editon 1070 and it works fine with daz iray.
like others said lot of consumers, custom build computer stores and others buying up in bulk happened with the 1080s at the start too you'll probably see some jacked up prices so be wary and shop around
Definitely not happy. I have to wait for my birthday this Saturday and the price still keeps going up, up, up. It looks like it will be out of the price range I can afford; so, I guess I won't be getting a new card anytime soon. And all because of some very greedy people trying to corner the market and jack the prices way out of sight.

Well, darn it. The 1080 I was looking at yesterday, for $529 with a $15 rebate, is $100 more today! I thought this issue was for the 1070s... Guess I shouldn't have waited to talk to the hubby first. But at least I already have one. Sorry those greedy jerks are messing with your birthday, Charlie.
The price of GTX 1070 and even the plain GTX 1080 went up so much that I decided to go for broke and ordered a GTX 1080 ti at what seems to be the standard non-inflated price ($780). I'll have to wait a couple of weeks for it to ship but at least it is at the price it has been since I started looking at cards a couple of monrths ago; It is an EVGA but I understand they have fixed the fire problem they had last fall:

EVGA GPUs were going up in flames?
Yes, there was a problem with the thermal sensors on some of the GTX 10xx series last fall.

NVidia and AMD can't get their 'mining specific' GPUs to the market fast enough. Cryptominers are grabbing whatever they can, and working their way up the product chains.
The 'entry level' cards are still around for OK prices, but a 2 GB card probably isn't better than the card you have now, unless you don't have an NVidia card to begin with. But again, when it comes to Iray, More VRAM good, and buying a 'stopgap' card until this whole thing blows over might just be silly...
I looked up crypto mining and it looked like it was allowing your computer to be used for processing problems to obtain bitcoins. From what I r. Any insights?ead this seems like a very bad idea but I don't really understand why this is driving the price of video cards so high.
It has to do with the processing power jump from last generation's GPUs to the current 10xx series. Cryptocurrency mining is all about the processing power vs power consumption vs cost to build tradeoff. For right now the sweet spot seems to be GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 cards. Within a few months a cryptocurrency miner will have their mining computer paid off, and it will generate a nice tidy profit after factoring out power consumption. The problem is that it's a volitile market and the more coins that get mined the harder each successive coin will be. Sometme within the next 6 months to a year the current gen GPUs will cost more in electricity than they will be able to mine.
The terible side effect for us is that the cost of the GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 cards are stupid inflated right now.
Current lowest price on newegg (new only, no refubished cards)
GTX 1050 2GB : $103.99
GTX 1050 ti 4GB : $139.99
GTX 1060 3GB : $359.99
GTX 1060 6GB : $399.99
GTX 1070 8GB : $692.99
GTX 1080 8GB : $519.99
GTX 1080 ti 8GB : $699.99
Thanks for the explanation. There must be a very large lot of cryptominers to drive the price up so much. From your list it looks like you could get a GTX 1080 ti for the same price as a GTX 1070. The GTX 1080 ti I got was a bit more than the lowest priced one but I liked I figured that the three fans would be better for cooling during renders.
...just a footnote here and maybe a silver lining in all this.
I have seen a couple articles today which mentioned that both Sapphire and ASUS are looking to release GPU cards based on AMD and Nvidia GPU chips respectively that are specifically geared towards crypto mining to be released in the coming months, These cards will not have any video output and therefore will be useless for gaming or CG work. One comment referred to them as "a poor mans Tesla".
Why would no video outputs make them useless for CG work? If there were no outputs it would seem to potentially solve the issue with Windows taking RAM for a frame buffer, making them more useful for rendering (as secondary cards) than the current cards.
...there was also something about video processing being disabled. As this is very recent news, the articles I read were not totally clear on the exact details, but all did mention that these cards will not work for gaming or CG production.
As long as you have a good cooling system you will be fine. Some GPU's can put off a lot of heat. I'm not familiar with this card to know how hot it runs. You can get gadgets for GPU meters for your desktop to keep an eye on it. The one I sue is simply called GPU Meter.
Strange. I just checked the NVIDIA website and you can buy a GTX 1070 FE direct from them for $399. But if you check newegg, most of the 1070's are in the $700 range.
I don't get it.
Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks.
UPDATE: Never mind, when you go to check out it says $798, and it's on back order.
Price doubled from when I bought it a couple months ago? Geez.
Don't worry the crypto currency bubble never lasts very long when there is a GPU processing power jump. Pretty soon those cards will cost more to opperate than what they will be able to mine.
Well, for me it probably won't matter. I ordered this at $779: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y15DWXR/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER and it should arrive this afternoon. It was more than I had planned to spend but then again I will be getting a more powerful card than the GTX 1070. So, I may be better off in the long run.
I guess tomorrow I get to install it. If all goes well and it fits (it is huge) and works well then I won't need the GTX 970.
I planned to use the free MSI Afterburner.
Just an update on the topic. I've been keeping an eye on the price for the MSI 1080 that is a match for the one in my computer. When I first posted about the price in here, June 18th, it was at $549.99 at NewEgg. I wanted to discuss it with the hubby before buying, but the next day, it was around $100 dollars more. It maxed out at $749.99. Took about a week, I think. But the price has been coming down the past few days. First is was $739.99, then $699.99 for a day, and today it's at $639.99...
I've got my fingers crossed it will continue to go down... And with the price going up in cost so fast, I wonder if prices were already on the rise when I found it at $549.99. I'd be delighted to pick it up for under $500... (It's a 1080, not 1080ti.)
