I try with them, and I get some decent effects on occasons, but I think its down to luck.

I could't agree more. I use his burshes all the time. Admitedaly, I don't get the same results but it's a lot of fun trying. Amazing work from an amaging artist!
That's the only problem with Ron's brushes. It is very hard to achieve a similar quality of the images, like his promo ones.
He should seriously consider releasing an over the shoulder video tutorial for using his brushes to create the kinds of images he does. It would only help his sales.

I've sworn off buying any more brushes until I learn how to use them - the problem is more my lack of knowledge rather than Ron's brushes. I'm spending each weekend working my way though Lynda.com photoshop courses trying to grasp a few areas I am weak on. So I'd buy a Tutorial by Ron showing how he achieves his promos, then I'd probably have to fill in gaps in his brushes I haven't bought so far :-)
I would be much more interested in such a tutorial than yet another brush set. And brushes being marketed for over $40 is enough to stop me from buying any more anyway, unless I can learn to use them better first..
I wish they'd be for CS and CC. I'm still using CS 5X because I don't want to mess with cloud.
I believe there's a 2500 pixel-size limit- and that's the difference between the older version and the new.
So I don't know what it would take to offer both versions and/or support.
Most of his brushes (before 2017) will work with CS5. I was on CS5 until late last year, when I finally took the plunge with CC. I have a lot of Ron's brushes and only remember having trouble with one or two of them, that state on the product page that they're for CS6 and up.
I love his latest set, but at $30 intro price, I'll have a wait a little while.

I swear some of his ,at least older brushes, came with mini tutorials, but it's possible i'm remembering something that never existed, wouldn't be the first time.
Don't have photoshop. So I'm down to simple abr-brushes, which means, I can't use his new brushes.
I think the $30 price is to give us an opportunity to contribute to the cause: Ron has been kicking cancer's butt for the past year.

I think that you are right, but it is a question of remembering which sets it is that have tutorials.
Also Ron does often use images done by other people as promos, so when that is the case he wouldn't be able to give instructions.
Most of Ron's brushes come with a .pdf showing reasonable-sized thumbnails of what the various brushes look like. The one for Ron's Concrete has a mini-tutorial (a few hints really, just a couple of paragraphs) at the bottom of that .pdf and Ron's Detail Smoke has a .jpg mini-tut with an idea of how you can create a flame effect from a smoke brush..
There's a fuller .pdf tutorial in Ron's Flames which I found very useful.
Ron's Particles used to have a 10-minute .mov tutorial on creating a fire effect but it seems to have been removed from the most recent download file in DIM (I keep old versions for a while, in case the new one has a problem, which is how I discovered this) - it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the Particles product, so maybe that's why it was removed.
ETA: I only have 59 out of 104 of Ron's sets, so there may be some others with tutorials that I can't help with.
Agreed. Whomever is making those promos is clearly a Photoshop god!

I don't have Smoke 1 and 2 but have the Detail Smoke and Steam & Smoke set. These two are very different. The Detail Smoke brushes are very crip defined lines while the brushes in the Steam & Smoke are more of a cloud consistency with exception of one brush that is in line with the detail smoke. (See Snip below to see what I mean by crisp defined lines.) If I were to do someone smoking I'd definitely use the Detail Smoke but if I was doing a steampunk image or something like an old factory with smoke stacks I'd use the Steam & Smoke brush set. From the images in promo, I can't tell if the old Ron's Smoke set of brushes is as crip as the Detail Smoke set.
Edit: I think the new Steam set looks different than the two sets I have. Again....can't speak for the old set.
I have Explosion and Flames. These are very different products. Explosion is a set of layered PSDs while Flames is a brush set. Explosion has 7 PSD files each dedicated to one element. Elements covered are 50ish layers each: smoke; debris; glass; sparks; charges; bursts; and fire. Fire has 52 layers each consisting of a different flame. Smoke consists of 53 layers none of these layers are like detailed smoke.
^This - I've got both smoke and detailed smoke - both useful, but the detailed smoke is more crisp ('detailed' as the name suggests).
