Today is memorial day and NO Memorial day sale?

Should be a terrific sales day for all things military and patriotic.

All I see is more of the same 4 year old content I've seen for past few days

Last Monday in May is Memorial day

I am not American but it somehow does not strike me as a day to celebrate with a sale, as seems to be more geared towards putting flowers on graves of those who died in wars rather like our Anzac day.

Likely they aren't asleep but closed to allow their employees to take vacation like many businesses in the US.  I did get an email  announcing their Memorial Day Summer Flashback sale.

They could easily have pitched a 'in honor of the fallen' and a few promos of old men with ghostly soldiers next to them and so on.

Then again, at least we didn't get weirdly young white women with their stuff hanging out of their fatigues.

I think it's hard to do a patriotic/military service geared render without getting into the stars and stripes type thing which they can do for July (fourth of July.)  The military clothing, flags, etc can work for either one, in addition to Veteran's Day. Vendors also have to consider what's already on the market before creating new things, so not having a sale specifically for Memorial Day didn't bother me at all.

And heartfelt condolences for anyone who has lost a family member, friend, or relative in the armed services. Thinking about you today.

They might be treading lightly. I remember last year there was an In Remembrance sale on 9/11 and someone brought up them capitalizing on the tragedy.

Me and my father are both veterans.and correct, It is in honor of those who have served and those who have fallen. It is a day of remembrance and to put flowers on all the graves of soldier how lost their life defending freedom.

As a veteran, I'd actually like to commend DAZ for NOT having some giant flashy blowout sale today. Memorial Day is about remembering those who gave their lives for this country, not a merchandising event.

Well, there is a lot of military related stuff that falls under the current (pre 2013 Daz orginials) sale.  I just bought a Jeep and a WWII motorcycle with sidecar, and also a tracked missile launcher...

Almost bought an armored HUMMV too.

That being said, yes I did get the email mentioning Memorial Day savings.  I think that's a trickly slope though.  Today is supposed to be about remembering those that fought and died in wars protecting the ideals of their country, not which screaming deals can I find at the local electronics store or online.  And plenty of war related movies on the TV today, although I picked Godzilla vs Destroyah instead as background noise for the morning.

Also, while other countries do have their own rememberance day holidays, often in entirely different months, to remember their fallen, today's holiday is a US rememberance, and Daz does have customers outside of the US.  Having a sale for each of them might be slight overkill, although November seems to be a commonly picked month for some of those rememberances.  Yes, the US has stuck their neck out on multiple occasions protecting other countries, but one needs to be sensitive to how and when other countries remember their own fallen.  It's not always about US!

All that being said, a D-Day sale on June 6th wouldn't hurt my feelings!

Yeah, but the content here is art supplies, to make art. What more important art is there than memorials, reflections on emotions and war, and so on?

I mean, it's at least 'on topic' unlike 'hey, people fought and died for your freedom, so get a cheaper toaster'

Although I'm realizing how much military content I already own. Huh.

A higher discount on gift cards would have been nice, maybe 20 or 40 percent with no additional purchase (ahem).

I've never been a fan of commercializing what should be a day of remembrance.

Fine if you want to place relevant items out front that genuinely serve as a tribute, but just pick up any number of Memorial Day sale circulars (newspaper/junk mail) and you'll see the epitome of cheesy advertising pushing the limits of whatever passes for good taste these days.

DAZ has lots of sales, not having one that is an obvious Memorial Day sale is a lot better than cheesing it up with some nonsense that distracts from the intended purpose.

I think not going there was a good call on DAZ's part.

Memorial day is a day of parades.  Big ones little ones.  There are only a few days in the year for parades and many towns and groups want to have or sponsor parades so they have to divvy up the days.  My little town (500 people) has had a claim on Memorial Day parades since long before I was born.  I remember best the ones from the 1950s.  They seemed huge and went on for an hour or more.  Firetrucks, horses, old automobiles (like Model "T"s and "A"s), ancient road repair equipment and farm tractors.  Teams of magnificent horses both draft and riding.  Gussyed up wannabe cowboys and cowgirls with silver adorned saddles & tack on their horses.  Hay trailers with the town board members, various military/social groups of old men from WWI and younger members from WWII.  Some group that called themselves the "Oddfellows" who always met at the "Oddfellows Hall" on the main street before the parade to get organized, One or two High School bands, a flock of children led by their teachers, Boy Scouts, 8-15 year olds on decorated bicycles.  In the '60s my mother made a detailed recreation of 18th century costumes and she and my father walked the parade as George and Martha Washington.  The costumes have been passed on and are still used by another couple once a year.

We still have the parade but it is a shadow of its former glory.  If they didn't spread the people, animals and vehicles out, the show would be over in 10 minutes.  I haven't even taken the time to walk the two blocks to downtown in a couple of years but I still put my binoculars on the tripod and watch from my upstairs window.  Photos below were from two years ago.

The parade goes from the town hall to the cemetery and a ceremony honoring the war dead is held.  In my day the 6th grade class in elementary school always attended the ceremony and recited Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.  I still remember most of it.

Well military get year round discounts at many businesses (voluntary) with a valid military ID, similar to the way businesses do senior discounts, although it's been a while since I got one so I don't know if they still do them or how common they still are. I've noticed more and more businesses have started charging small children standard admission price for recreation parks so who knows. As far as utilizing there members of the military's selfless service for financial and political gain well the press and politicians pretty much already do that 24/7/365 so I ignore those types wearing their hearts on their sleeves as much as possible.

I buy grow flowers for Memorial Day but not to make a statement against commercialism simply for practical reasons - I want flowers that dry well and still look good a few months later when I place flowers again, although the cemetary groundskeepers do go around and collect the flowers after that look tattered anyway so that's not really too big a concern either way to buy at the store or grow flowers that dry well.

My son was in the parade today. He is in the school marching band playing snare drum. They are a military style band so it was well suited for this day.

Memorial Day has changed over time.

In my mothers day, for example, it was a general day to remember the dead not just military dead. Also the dead of WWI.

I am not a fan of the current incarnation of memorial day.

I tend to not do any shopping or support stores capitalizing off of days like today, what should be a day of remembrance. Its just in bad taste imo. Do a sale after or before and call it something else but today shouldnt be about getting the 'best discount' on things. Just puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Memorial Day was originally established to honor the fallen in the American Civil War both North and South (of course this year we are busy removing Civil War statues). Over the years it has become a day to honor all fallen American soldiers, the unofficial beginning of summer and family cookouts, and yes a day for sales. It was moved from the 30th to last Monday in May to insure a 3 day weekend for everybody to be free to enjoy however they want to.... that freedom has been protected by the sacrifices of brave men and women so enjoy the day but remember those that gave it to you.

I'm okay either way. I tend not to seek to control others actions because of my particular sentiment. If I don't think a sale is approrpiate, then I don't buy from it, but if others think its okay, I have no issue with it. This issue comes up a lot when people don't like sales on other holidays either. That said, I don't presume to dictate when sales should occur either. If a sale occurs, and there is something I want, I'm content. If not, then, I'm okay with it.

I have bought at Rendos' memorial sale coupon for the last two days, and I'm grateful for the coupon which allowed me to buy stuff I can't otherwise afford. I don't feel disresepectful at all for using it.

I was awoken early this morning (at 8:30) by my town's high school marching band playing in the memorial day parade.  That's one thing I like about my town, they still have these kinds of parades.  My son was in the school's marching band several years ago and he did walk/play (alto sax) in the parade for a few years.
