GTX 1080 assistance - Dual dvi

I ordered a Gtx 1080 video card, upgrade my Gtx 670.  I may have to cancel order.  Reason being, I use dual dvi monitors.  I've read numerous complaints online dvi does not work with 1080 cards, all types of reasons.  I also read online numerous people were having issues with display resolutions, refresh rates, etc....  appears new cards have compatibility issues with 1080 monitors.  I spoke with Nvidia today, asked if I could use my Gtx 670 to run my dual monitors and Gtx 1080 for 3D rendering only.  Rep states no.  Explained cards would have to be identical for SLI mode, os will automatically select primary card.

    No No No No......

    You are not running SLI (The rep assumed that you where trying to use both for gaming.)
    The computer will use whichever video card that you plug video cables into as the main card.

    Here is how to use the GTX 670 for windows and the GTX 1080 for Iray renders.
    1. Plug both cards into PCIE 16x slots (consult your motherboard manual to find if any slots are wired as 8x.  1080 gets priority for 16x slot if there is only 1 wired as 16x)
    2. Plug monitor cables into GTX 670
    3. Boot windows
    4. Install graphics driver from Nvidia (not from windows update)
    5. Arange desktops to your liking
    6. Start Daz Studio
    7. Render Settings Tab -> Advanced -> Hardware -> place check marks next to devices that you would like to use for your renders.
    8. Set up scene and hit render
    9. Enjoy being able to use your computer like normal without lag while rendering.

    Thanks for reply James.  Another problem.  My mobo cannot handle two large video cards.  Gtx 670 simliar size to Gtx 1080.  Using single card is fine, but is there anyway to connect dual dvi to Gtx 1080 without issues ?  That's the issue I'll have and most using older monitors with dvi output.  Although card has dvi in, many have clamined does not work, with older monitors etc.....  If not, I'll have to replace AM3+ mobo.  Here's the card I ordered.

    I don't know if this has any bearing on your problem, but I'm using my video card just for rendering, and my motherboard graphics to drive the monitor. It's been a pretty trouble-free setup.
    This is on a computer that is used only for 3D art, there's nothing else on it but Studio, Poser, Hexagon, etc. so I don't need a powerful display driver.
    This might solve your DVI monitor problem.

    Hi Peter, thanks for input.  Sounds like a perfect solution to me, only my mobo does not have onboard video.  I would have even tried my ole Gt 730 card to run display, but my mobo has limited room, 1 large card or 2 small cards.

    Rofl ! sorry Bob, just one of those day's, I'm in deep thought pertaining to video cards.  I've built all my systems, computer components constantly kept changing, I understand the basics, but not all the detailed technical aspects, but do understand purchasing built systems, eliminates all the headaches, enjoy your new rig.  .

    I know I was just saying I prolly could of shaved off some $$ by shopping newegg or Canada Direct but chose to stay local at a shop..I also was fotunate enough to build the system that takes advantage of said card..

    Bob, true you may have saved.  But I purchase a lot of computer parts locally from a local store.  Reason being, excellent, friendly staff, great customer service.  True, many of us can save money ordering online, but customer service is not the same, I ordered a mobo a few years ago to save money, board was dead on arrival.  RMA'd the board, took nearly 4 weeks for company to replace.  Local store replace parts immediately, if in stock.

    Thats definately part of it.. Im having them pop the wi fi in the old tower since it needs it in my master bedroom and check the fans ect ect..The tech who built it hepled me pass a warranty claim when I swicthed from the 2G ATI that was having some issues I had put in the old tower favoring using lux then. So it only cost me only 1/3 of the price to pop in the 980..

    My brain hurts, Lol !!  after extensive research on cards, monitors etc....  I've decided to purchase two Asus 22" monitors.  Monitors are Hdmi/display port output.  Goodness, didn't realize how old my display monitors were. 

    Last series video card with dual dvi is 970, which is priced scary high $538.99 (Newegg) .  Not much difference between Gtx 670 and Gtx 970, cept memory size 2 vs 4.  970 has slightly more cuda cores 1664 vs 1334.  Gtx 670 is a very impressive card for $150.  The Gtx 1080 performance doubles the Gtx 670, speed/cores. 

    Anyway, time to upgrade .......

    dude get a new Motherboard, they aren't that expensive if you just need another slot for a 1080 render only GPU. What size case do you have? My new rig has an Asus B250.  It's a basic MB but it will do me needs for now. I have room and spare slot for a render only GPU, probably a 1070. 

    or yeah upgrade the whole lot if you have the money. LOL

    Hi Pete, thanks for feedback.  I have an Antec 1200 V3 gaming case with 10 fans.  I'm awaiting the arrival of Amd Ryzen 16 core cpu, to build a new system near future, this time making sure mobo will handle two large cards.  Sweet mobo, you have.  Thanks I plan to yes

    Spoke with EVGA this morning, rep was very cool, patient and understanding, answered all my questions, states my monitors will work with Gtx 1080 FTW, explained how to set everything up.  Tells me to make sure I uninstall Nvidia drivers before adding new video card etc......  He also told me not to pay, to much attention to online reviews, if I have any problems/questions to contact EVGA.  Most having difficulties with monitors are customers with 2K or 4K monitors, but all 1080 monitors work fine.  Now, can't wait till 1080 card arrives smiley
