Saving characters

I've created three characters with hair and clothes that I want to re-use often for my graphic novel and I'm not sure how to save them correctly to be easily found again. When I save as a character preset, it seems to just save the character and no hair or clothes. When I save as a scene subset, it seems to save everything but the only place to find them is to go under file my Daz library/scene subset. Is there a way of putting the full character with hair and clothes right into the content directory or smart content so I can easily grab them each time? I also want to create sub folders of each character's name with the character wearing different hairstyles or clothing all in some easy to find area without having to go under file/scene subsets each time. How can I do this? Thanks.

You can save the file (scene subset, character preset, whatever) any place you like. You can even create a content library just for your graphic novel, with subfolders for each character, location, chapter, and/or page if you like.
You just need to do a "save as" and then browse to the desired location (which you will need to create and add as a DS content library if you want to go that route)
If you're using smart content, you'll need to create a category for them, and possibly a couple of other hoops I don't remember because I don't use smart content as intended.
They are already saved in my Daz 3D library but I have to go under file to get them. I mean, how can I get them directly into DS in the content library or as a catagory. They don't show up anywhere in DS, I have to search under file...
Add the directory where you have them saved as a content library.
On the Content Library tab, click on the box with the arrow and four lines. (Pane/tab options)
Then click on "Content Directory Manager"
Then "Daz Studio Formats"
Then the "add" button will become active. Click on it.
Then browse to your directory where you have your characters
Then "Select Folder"
Then "Accept"
And it should show up below the Daz Connect library.
I have a content directory called 'mydata'; I save character presets to mydata/presets/character/outfit. Currently I dig the presets out from the content tab; I'm playing around with categorization to put them in smart content, but it's not a big priority.
FWIW, I save everything to 'mydata' - character presets, props I whack together, re-textured outfits, whatever. And I make weekly backups of the directory.
Have you looked in the Saved Files category?
Everything goes into my Daz 3D library/presets, some under characters, some under poses, etc... And some things show up in the smart library under local user but not all of it, it seems really random and some things have white triangles with ! My whole DS is screwed up really, since March Madness started DIM stopped working and although everything is supposed to installed, it's not, and I have to click on each item and install through connect with control held down to install although the items are in color and appear installed. I keep refreshing metadata but nothing happens. To report all the problems to tech support I'd have to make hundreds of screenshots, just don't have the time. I've already reported some problems, and they couldn't find the answer.
In any case, I'll try DaWaterRat's method, but I'm getting really fed up with DS. I really wish G3 and IRay worked in Poser...I love the products and DIM was amazing when it worked, but now files all are all over the place, the character Brooke is still in the wrong place after a full year as are many other G3 characters not to mention older stuff. I wish Poser and DS would combine and create one software that actually worked correctly and supported IRay on Macs...
In Poser, I could at least find everything and install things to go where I wanted, organize everything and not have to worry that I would screw things up. I think I'm just going to have to stop buying any more content until I can find everything I already own and somehow organize it all in a logical way. It just takes too long to figure out where everything is and having to remember that certain characters like Brooke are installed in completely different areas as other G3 characters, and some characters don't show up at all except as sliders in random places.
Sorry for the rant but I think DS needs to be fixed and have a detailed manual before spewing out more and more content (as wonderful as most of it is) for a broken software.
It sounds as if you may have something blocking communication between the CMS (PostgreSQL) and DIM, though I'm not entirely following the description.
I've been saving directly into my content folder since I first started using the very first version of DAZ|Studio waytoomany years ago. I've never had problems not being able to find a scene, and I've never had problems with corrupted scene files (except for the occasional old .daz file that still loads into D|S3 but D|S4.9 doesn't want to know about it).
First, there's never any need to save using the File menu; this means navigating manually to the proper folder every time, which can be a bit of a bother. I always either go to or create a folder in the DAZ Studio Formats section of the Content Library tab; this ensures that by definition the file will always be in a known-to-D|S content location. Click on the "+" button at the bottom of the Content Library tab, select the proper format (Scene, or Scene Subset, or whatever), and that's it. No fuss, no bother.
The only gotcha to watch for is that this only places the scene into the Content Library tab — it won't (I think) get entered into the content database, so it won't appear in the Smart Content tab unless you put it there manually.
@wonderland If you want to save everything, and have it load into place, that would be Scene Subset. The nice thing about those is that you can go to File>Merge and load the subsets into your current scene, otherwise, you get that popup asking if you'd like to save the current scene and close it. They're very handy, because you can't merge a scene and scene, or open a scene with another one open. Jaderail, bless his heart, showed me scene subsets years ago and it was an "Aha!" moment. If you don't want things loading at World Center and want them where you put them in the scene, that's the way to go- Scene Subset. PM me if you get a chance- you can easily do your book stuff in Categories in Content Library too.
The plus sign is always greyed out and unusable for me...
I saved as scene subsets, but they are in a preset folder only accessible through going to file. Can only get a few random presets of my own to show up in content library or smart content. Something went wonky at the beginning of March Madness and DIM and other things haven't worked correctly since. Had a ticket into Tech Support and so far they were unable to help. I'll try again...
Got a bunch more Poser stuff on super sale and will enjoy using Poser again at least, after these DS headaches. Except now I want to use G3 for my main comic characters so I guess I'm stuck with DS and headaches for that...
Going to a conference tomorrow Novica, but will PM you after, thanks!
The + will be greyed out if you are in the wrong type of folder - a category or product view, a virtual Daz Connect folder, or a Poser-format folder. It is available when viewing a real Daz Studio format folder.
DIM stopped working suddenly at the beginning of March Madness, so now everything has to be Connect. How can I replace the Connect files with real ones? I would love for DIM to work again, but no one can figure out why it isn't working. Everything is directed to the right place, I've showed screenshots, and it worked perfectly prior to March Madness...
this was something been wondering about too got a few characters and kit bashed creatures and other stuff which before I saved just as a scene then did the merge into option but sometimes lost several characters accidently saving over them just tried the save charcater yes kept look shape but lost add ons but with another tried the save as scene subset and that saved the charcater and add-ons like a chainsaw arm as a set :) so that works :) all these in my saved files folder in my smart content
