Rigging new objects: do all face groups become bones?

When importing an obj file to rig in d|s, do all the face groups become bones, or can you group several of them as the same bone?

Legacy rigging or weight-mapped? If you drag an OBJ into the relationships area of Figure Setup you will get a bone per group, but you can add bones that lack groups and remove bones leaving the bones unassigned; in a legacy rig groups without bones won't do anything, but bones without groups (but parented to a bone with a group) can be used as handles; for weight-mapping a bone can be set to influence any area of the mesh, the grouping is not functionally critical though it will be used to guide the initial bone placement and for selection in the viewport.
