It depends on the type of damage you want to inflict. I've had some good success with the following:

It just depends on if you are comfortable using just shaders or if you're also comfortable modifying textures in a 2D program. I've also been known to take a prop or armor into Hexagon and bang the heck of out of, too, to get some nice dents and turn it into a morph. That, plus shaders, actually does a very nice job.
I did this:
to Watch Dog before I even really knew what I was doing. Just took it into Hexagon and banged the heck out of it and sent it back to DS and created a morph for it. Then used the Mec4D shaders for the dirt, rust, and stuff. They go right over the original textures and work really well. I like being able to do things inside DS. I'm still learning postwork so I'm not as good with brushes and doing things after the fact yet.
