    Of course, given all that, maybe I'd be better off using displacement maps, because they'd be capable of much finer detail. Hrm

    Instead of going through all of this conversion work, why not just sculpt to begin with? Even with using Mudbox's displacement based sculpting, you're still limited to the amount of polys in the mesh.

    Eventually I will, but Substance Painter does some really fun texturing.

    In future I'll probably sculpt in Mudbox and then have to play bake games to extract maps to use.

    You could do a base sculpt in Mudbox, then paint displacement/normals to help fine tune the details rather than having the maps drive all of the details.
