OOT Hairblending 2.0 - Love it but need help!

Hi everyone,
So I have several of the hair products featuring OOT Hairblending 2.0 and while all of the different color options are some of the best around and look great in my renders, I cannot for the life of me get the results I want with blending the hair. I can't get the colors correct, the blending effects correct, or even successfully use the Preset blending options. What I am currently trying to use specifically is the Topmodel Updo.
I am assuming I am mixing up the Base colors and Blending colors (I would think it would be obvious but not getting the correct results), and that I am clicking on the options out of order.
- I am wondering if anyone is willing to walk me through an example step-by-step so I understand how to do this, as in what to click on first, then how to use the other blending options.
- As a request, a good example for me would be how to make brown hair with blonde streaks, or blonde hair with pink streaks - anything that will be really obvious whether or not I did it correctly really. I would certainly post the results and see what you think.
- I know some of the OOT products have ON/OFF buttons for the hairblending but some do not, specifically the one I am trying to use which is the OOT Topmodel Updo.
I have looked all around for a tutorial on how to do this but cannot seem to get this correct. Yes, I did read the included PDF but to no avail. Thank you in advance for any help, and hopefully it will help out others as well.

Do you have any renders to show us how it is not working right? That will help us help you.
Unfortunately I don't at the moment as I keep cancelling the renders since they aren't coming out as expected. Essentially though applying a hairblending option just changes the whole hair color without blending it no matter which blending style I choose. The only things that are working are the Utilities options such as adding a color tint to a base color.
Without specifics, I am not sure where exactly this issue is for you, but I was having issues that sound a bit like what you are describing with the Rasta hair. That one does not have an "on" button for blending, but what threw me off is that the first four presets that I thought were blending styles were actually blending strengths. So I was applying different strengths thinking it was a blend from top to bottom, but it wasn't adjusting anything I could see in the render. I don't have the specific hair you mentioned yet, but maybe the steps I went through will help you.
As a test, after applying the "apply this first" and the base color, I went to the blending presets and selected one of the ones with horizontal stripes first since that would be "obvious" even if the hair is done in an up-do. Then selected from that folder the "secondary" color I wanted, and I made sure one color choice was very light and one very dark.
If you can render and see the horizontal stripes, then you at least know that it is working properly. I am still trying to get used to the strengths and settings to hit exactly the look I want, but it helped me to look closer and see what were essentially "styles" of blending versus blending strength.

Thank you for the step by step instructions but that seems to be exactly what I was doing. This may be a dumb question but do I select the base color as the primary color or the underlying color? In other words, If I want blonde hair with pink highlights would the blonde be the base and the pink be the hairblending color or vice versa? I seem to be getting the opposite results at times...
I will attempt a couple test renders with specific steps I took later.
Hey there,
I have attempted again to follow these instructions step by step but having the same result - No matter which blending option or color I choose to blend into the hair nothing at all happens, the only time the hair changes at all is when I change the base color itself. I am very confused :-/
I double-checked the hairblending styles and have tried each style to see if that was the issue but none of them work. In fact, there are no options in there for hairblending strength though many of the other OOT products do have that. I have attached a picture of the available options under Hairblending starting from the very top, as you can see it begins with Style 11.... I'm starting to wonder if it even installed properly and if there should be an ON/OFF option in there somewhere...
Iray or 3delight?
SOLVED!
Ok everyone so I think I figured out a solution. It turns out, as I mentioned to AlmightyQUEST, that the files did not install and I believe it is because I had another OOT product which prevented it from duplicating the files... or something along those lines. Not too technical I know.
The particular hair I am working with had Hair Blend style which started at Style 11 and had no ON/OFF switches which is why I was not seeing any changes when applying hair blending colors. Another OOT hair I have does have the ON/OFF switch plus blending styles up to Style 10...
So I simply copied all of the .duf files from the other OOT hair folder and pasted them into the one I needed, then copied the files for hairstyles 11-20 and copied them back into the other one. It now seems to work!
Iray
I still have one more question for you guys however.
First off it seems that I have to pick the color I want to be the hair streaks as the Base Color and the primary hair color as the blending color. Is this normal?
Alright, two questions actually. After turning the Hairblending to ON it then turns my base color back to the white Iray base mat color. Do I then need to reselect the base color or something, because it seems that the highlights in the hair are just the white color?
Thanks again everyone!
Here is an example for my last comment.
I selected blonde as the base color for the blonde streaks, turned hairblending ON (went to white), selected brown for the blending color then blending style and strength, so the streaks in her hair are white (almost bluish), not blonde.
In all fairness this is only 15% rendered, do I simply need to wait until it fully renders?
Almost there...
I agree with patrickm576. I have never really tried the hairblending option until reading this post and it does not work even when using the hairblending PRESET Styles. I'm really not getting any of the results like the promo pictures. And also is the Rasta hair supposed to have the "on" button? How do you activate the hairblending.
You may want to eliminate the potential that you are having the same issue and right click on any of the hairblending options -> open containing folder then see if the files you need are in there. Although it is now working I am still having the same issue with it turning white and not the desired color but I think that is something I am doing out of order because all of the selections do now work and change the hair when I click on them.
For the Rasta hair, as I mentioned while it does not have the "on" button as some of the other OOT hairs do, if you apply the "apply this first", then the base color from the MATS>IRAY folder, then in the MATS>IRAY>Hairblending Colors select a blending option like "Rasta Tails Hair Hairblending !Style 01" (not a strength option like "Rasta Tails Hair Hairblending !Strength A" like I was doing at first), and then in that same hairblending folder select the second color you want to use (this would go where the "white" on the style thumbnail would be).
You do not need to copy a file from any other OOT for this, I do not know whether that itself could potentially cause any issues (or at least, make it look like it's doing something when it isn't applying anything, since it is a materials file and not a shader preset, so by default it looks to the object and not the selected surface). It doesn't look like any of the OOT hairs I have come with one click blending presets, which is to say it looks like you need to select a style and then a color, but it is possible some of the other hairs do have one-click presets.
I think they all may have a little differences in the methods of achieving the desired look. When I tried the Cathy hair - hairblending presets they came out quite lovely. But like patrickm576 I am getting a white color with some of the hair blending for instance with the sporty ponytail. But I will keep trying and posting. Thanks for both of your help
Thanks for clearing up the steps you took. The thing that is odd is that when I activate the hairblending it turns the base color back to white, I then reselect the desired base layer, which does show up correctly in the preview pane (as in the selected color not white), but when I render in Iray it shows up white as you can see in the picture above. The white is the base layer I apply over the mat shading template when first loading the hair, which shows up pure white until you choose a base color. It changes once I do and looks correct in a render but as soon as I turn ON the hair shading option it goes back to white until I reselect the base layer color. Here is another picture to show you what I mean, about how all of the selections are working but the base layer is still showing up pure white in renders (subtly) although the base color is showing correctly in the preview pane.
This has been one of the more perplexing issues I have run into.
Picture 1 = Showing up as blonde in the preview pane, and works until I apply the hairblending option
Picture 2 = Proving #1 with a quick render
Picture 2 = After applying hairblending and what should be the blonde color is the pure white mat
Thanks for your input and please do keep us posted I know I would appreciate it!
