Why the ginormous updates?

This is the 3rd time that the Bone Shaders have updated for me (just one example).  Each time it reloads the entire thing.  So that means over 2gb worth of downloading.  And, this isn't the only update in my DIM right now.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm really happy that updates happen.  I just don't quite understand why the entire thing has to be reloaded.  Can't the runtime files just be appended to add the updates?

I have a reasonably fast connection. But, 2gb is a long time to download.

I'm really asking the question...not just griping. :)

If you're using DIM, like I am, it's because the system isn't designed to just download the differences between what's on the download server and what's on your PC/MAC. It has to download the entire zip file instead of only what's changed.

Does it work differently in Connect?

Yes, there, it can just download the changed parts...

Well, this might be a case for Connect...at least for the big shader packs.  I really much prefer DIM.  But, if it can save me hours of downloads, I might have to go with Connect on some of it.

There was also something wrong with one of the recent Bone Shader updates, they wouldn't install correctly for a lot of people.  From what I've read, this last one appears to have worked finally.

  • Ah...Thanks.

I should mention, I tend to download the Connect file and its Authorization file from the product library in my account into the cloud install folder in my content folder and tell Daz studio to install it... I then know exactly what I'm downloading and Connect recognizes them for updates.

The problems that Bone and Scale shaders have had are specific to Connect -- the paths change or other files get updated, but instead of uninstalling the old version and placing the new, Connect has been putting one copy after another after another onto people's systems, and recognizing that there are several copies installed. It doesn't work that way for most products, so they've had difficulty figuring out why it's happening with this one. (Winter Fantasy G3F and also Hammam have been showing the same issues, reportedly.)

Puzzling thing is, I have that product, and didn't get an update yesterday. I wonder if it's because I never installed with Connect?
