DIM and DS/Ps/CF files

When a product has both a DS and a Ps version, and no CF files, is it always enough just to install the DS version in DAZ Studio, or are there cases where you also need to install the Ps file?

Also, how about a product like Air Bike, which has three files - which file(s) do you need to install in DS (I assume in Poser you need both the first and the last)?:

Air Bike
Air Bike DS
Air Bike PoserCF

If theer are PS and DS files then you probably need only the DS files, and the same if there are PoserCF files for the DS files - those are strictly for Poser (well, you could use them to load the content from a Poser Format content directory, if you wanted to)

So no strict rules here (you say "probably")?

If you are using DIM, hover the mouse pointer over the product name and the popup will have info regarding the file. Look at the Tag(s) field, and it will give the applicability. In this case:

Air Bike -> Daz Studio 4, Daz Studio 3, Daz Studio (<3), Poser 9+, Poser (<9)

Air Bike DS -> Daz Studio 4.5+, Connect Available

Air Bike PoserCF -> DSON Importer for Poser

If you are using Daz Studio 4.5 or higher, you only need the "Air Bike DS" file. If you are using Poser, you will need both "Air Bike" and "Air Bike PoserCF". You could use "Air Bike" in DS 4.9, but it won't be in the latest format, and probably less than optimal.

Some much earlier products had the Poser file as the main content, and a StudioCF file with DS optimizations. Sometimes there were two independent files (DS and Ps), but sometimes you need both for Studio because some components were only in the Poser file, like geometries (hence the "probably"). Then there are Legacy versions of some DS products that you might also need to install if the material add-on sets aren't up to date with the latest base model.

Basically, install the least and try it. If something is missing, you'll find out.

    It's complicated...

Hm, yea, complicated indeed, hadn't even considered different files for different versions of DS/Poser. indecision  Well nothing to do about it I guess, unless they redo the whole system from scratch which I doubt will happen.

    Thanks!

The problem is, naming conventions for different types of content really didn't exist much in the early days of D|S, and most names don't get changed to keep up with the times. Things are (usually) a lot better with new goodies coming out nowadays, but for a lot of the older stuff, you need to read the store pages carefully and check .zip file sizes to figure out what's which.

Well AFAIU they revised all the files when they repacked them for DIM, but apparently not in a way that's as simple to understand for users as I thought (like just one file for Poser and one for DS for each product).

In many cases they packed older products the way they were packed in the Bitrock installers rather than delaying getting everything into DIM.  As for the naming, DS/Ps are supposed to be stand-alone and CF not, but there were some errors.  They've corrected all the ones I reported a long time ago.
