Placing a Sword in the Hand

So I am working on a render. I've set the pose of my actor and then went to place the sword (prop) in his hand. However the sword doesn't lineup IN the hand. It is in front of it, behind it but not in it.

Should I have placed the sword in the hand before the pose?

Well it's usually easier that way and once placed correctly you parent the sword to the hand or the holster or what not and then when you pose the figure the sword follows.

  • I got it. Played around for a while and finally figured it out.

Note that there are different ways of setting up a held-in-the-hand prop. Sometimes it's just placed in the scene roughly where a normal figure's hand would be. Sometimes it's set to load in the zero point of the scene. Sometimes it's set to parent automatically to a figure's hand. A recent trend is for the prop load to include a preset that also puts the figure's hand into a "grip" pose. It isn't always easy to tell which type you've got until you try it.
