IRAY Shader Presets Icon

Most iray shaders use the same icon...the little weird magic 8 ball looking thing.

Where does that come from?  Is it a standard thing?

Yeh, but what the heck is it supposed to be? A webcam?

Or some universal 'perfect shape' for demonstrating shader/lighting effects?

I don't know if it is the "perfect shape" but it is a "really good shape" with curves, round parts, flat parts, and edges so you can get a good idea of how your material would look on a variety of surfaces. It is just a material ball. It does what it says on the tin. Might be more fun to think of it as an incognito webcam, or the end bit of a Dalek's eye stalk.

Toonces was awesome by the way.

Shader widgets, commonly spheres, are just very common for texture artists to use when testing textures because it shows it on different edges, curves, and depending on the widget can give a decent sense of what the ambient occlusion will look like.
