Saving the figure without the background (gridlines)?

I am interested in using multiple figures in one scene.  But I believe I would have to save the figure without the background.  Would I have to hide hte background, and if so, how do I do that?

If you save a render as .tiff or .png any areas that don't have geometry (or rendered environment), as shown by the checquered pattern in the render window, will be masked.
