    Second Entry

    Title:
    In The Air Tonight

    Software:
    Carrara 8.1
    Photoshop CS5

    Stonemason Products Used:
    Urban Future 4: Street Level
    Urban Sprawl 2 (small props)
    The Backstreets (small props)

Wow, very strong credible street image. I must say it's great to see such detail packed into a scene, and it also gave my ego a kick to see one of my products in an image like that too (the taxi).

    Thanks, Fire Angel!

That taxi just had to make an appearance. I really like that car's design. I'm a big fan of your products!

Nice! I figured as much. I have Carrera, but haven't delved into it much yet. I'm still figuring out DS and think I should have it down a bit better before heading off into yet another software. Now I'm looking forward to it!

Don't hesitate to jump into Carrara. Personally, I think it is much easier to use than DAZ Studio. From my perspective, it is easier to achieve the effects I'm envisioning in my mind and easier to physically arrange a scene and gives me a lot more creative freedom. The main benefit is that it is NOT figure centric, but is instead scene centric, though you can still do anything to a figure in Carrara that you could do in DAZ Studio. Plus, if you need to tweak something, the modeling tools are right there (though they require a bit more effort to learn). Though I have both Poser and DAZ Studio, I haven't touched either of them in a few of years.

I agree, redhorse. Carrara for me has a better feeling than the other DAZ software; when approaching a whole scene is important to rely on a software that covers so many aspects of the creative process. The many tools available may be inspirational for making a great scene even starting from few base objects.
I'm with you in encouraging dumorian to experiment more with Carara. :)

BTW: I agree with dumorian, too, In The Air Tonight is really a great entry! :-)

My first entry. (not sure I'll have time for a second)
I kept finding reasons to postpone putting this up; it needed more, it needed less or maybe the light was wrong, a different angle perhaps but I think I can keep tweaking till the stars go dark an the universe dies so here it is...

    Big Softy

    DAZ Studio 4.5

    Stonemason products used:

    City Ruins Building 03
    City Ruins Building 04

    Other products

    Genesis
    Mr Hyde
    Young teens 5 Julie
    Mall girl
    Songbird ReMix Flock formations
    PH Space
    PH Lovely
    Atmosphere Cameras

He asked them to leave him alone, they laughed. He pleeded that just made them laugh even harder. He told them they wouldn't like him if he got angry, they didn't listen. So they broke his glasses, tossed his bag and kicked his books through the hallway but when they banged his head against the side of the stall trying to shove his head down the toilet he could no longer control it. He got angry and smashed and now they aren't laughing. Now they are...afraid.

But no, this one had not laughed. This one is not afraid?!

Thanks! I like yours too. I see a cool art deco-like aesthetic that makes me think of a movie poster or world's fair brochure from that era. Nicely done!

    1st Entry--

    Title: Horizon Ablaze

    Stonemason: The Core, Regenerator, Cambot

    Software: DS4.5, Photoshop CS2, Hexagon 2.5

Okay, so I posted this last night and then went to bed, hehe.

Anyway, This is my first work in DS, and my first complete scene. I have been hobby modeling in Bryce for years, and decided to get into some real modeling and scene making finally.

This scene started with me just loading some stuff into Daz and learning the program, and found I couldn't walk away from it, lol. I had plans for more, but this scene was starting to seriously tax my machine's memory, so I reached a place I could be satisfied with, and rendered.

Texture alterations and post in PS CS2, mesh alterations in Horizon, assembly and render in DS4.5.

Constructive critisism welcome. I am really new to scene construction and lighting. Already I think this picture is too saturated . . . particulary in comparison to the color levels of other entries. Live and learn . . .

I would find hugely amusing if Stefan picked and non entry as a winner. ;) Nice to see though they are I am having a hard time keeping up with the competition. LOL

    It's like a 101 uses for a Stonemason prop, I love it.

...heh, that might be the only way I can win something in this.

Still wrangling with OS configuration issues on the new workstation which need to be resolved before I can start installing everything and setting up a custom runtime (which will be at least a two week process in and of itself). Have a fun idea, but no way could I pull it off on the 32 bit system even with multi pass rendering and layering as 4.5 doesn't run very well on it and much of the new .trx/.duf content as well as Genesis won't work in older versions of the app.

Well think of me trying to use a P3 with a unrecognised OpenGL version GC. I am having issues with seeing my images without a proper calibrated screen..this old GC just won't have it so everything looks darker than it should. I have tested this by sending some very nice people to see what an image looks like on their screens. So I am guessing to the brightness of an image with the feedback I got with my first entry I didn't post here. About 25% increase in brightness seems the norm. Plus I run out of memory very quickely and it takes ages to render the simplest of images if it doesn't crash first.

But saying this I have mangaed to get a second nearly finished. :)

...when I did my Child or War pic (link several pages back) I had to delete just about everything I could from the City Ruins Building 01 set I used that couldn't be seen in the viewport, remove all the grass transmaps, and use a very simple non-UE/IBL lighting setup to get it to render without crashing. That was also done in 3.1Advanced and took a heck of a long time to render even using shadow mapping.

It came out surprisingly well, considering. One of those rare times everything seemed to fall into place just right. Not sure if I can luck into that happy medium again (most definitely not with 4.5). The submission idea I have requires far more processor/memory resources than I currently have at my disposal.

Oh well you totally understand then.... I hope you get your workstation up and running soon..it has been a long time coming. I have another 6 months to wait before I can afford a new one. It has taught me more about rendering in layers and using masks more and compositing in Photoshop which is fun for me so I can't complain too much.

...I can't even use MoodMaster2 for Studio3.1 as my system's chipset doesn't support the version of DirectX it needs (why it's dependent on something that is pretty much used for gaming, I don't know), so I would have to backtrack all the way to Studio 2.3 to do any serious multi pass rendering and compositing which even further limits what content I can use (and is even slower at rendering than 3.1A)

  • SzarkSzark Posts: 10,634

LOL Listen to use moaning about our tools. I can use MM2 and Surface Mask Creator. It doesn't give me a good OpenGL display but renders masks ok. Yes I am using DS3A also.

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 40,817
    edited February 2013

...MM2 doesn't even load up for me when I click on it. I posted about this a while back in the Nuts & Bolts forum only to learn that it required DirectX 10 to work. My system's chipset tops out at version 9 with no support for newer upgrades (Intel integrated graphics)

Same for OpenGL. The last update for it is 1.4 which is the bare minimum to even fire up Studio 4.5. I have to work very slowly as well, for if I make too large a camera move or morph adjustment, the viewport goes to blank grey and I have to exit the app & restart it (means a lot of intermittent saves which fortunately go faster than in 3.1).

As I mentioned in a previous post (almost near the beginning of this thread) I am using a p4 and surprisingly Daz 2.3 something or other. The point is, if you can't use the programs you want with the computer you have, then use older programs...many of them still give great images that can easily compete with what has been shown so far. When in need...improvise.

On a side note...Stonemason...would it be a valid entry if I did the image as a toon/cartoon? My meaning is, I am learning how to use the toon render in Daz and it gives some great results. Now I know it does not give the clear view of your products in doing this, however, it does give a different perspective on how your products look when done this way.

...however a lot of the newer content, especially since the release of 4.x and move to the .duf/.trx format will not work on older versions of the app.

...and I'm not even referring to Genesis as I already know that requires Studio 4.x
